Have some questions as to whether or not it is possible to add bearings to old school Penn Reels like Monofils, Surfmasters, Jigmasters, Senators, etc.

Can it be done?

no, you really don't have that option. but the option you do have is to replace the $3 end cap bushing. with a pair new bushings and a drop of corrosion x, many spools will give you up to 30 seconds of freespool. you don't even have to remove the side plate to change out the bushings. and if there is no improvement in freespool, then the next step is to replace the pinion gear. crud inside the gear rubs against the spool shaft and slows it down. and don't mess with or try to polish the spool shaft. it only makes things worse.

honestly, you don't need bearings.
