Why was the striped bass introduced to california? What species' has it displaced? Why would we want to encourage a non-native species?

Stripers are very much part of this ecosystem since they were introduced in the late 1800s. Over 100 years and only recently have we seen so many issues...They didnt' affect the salmon runs for decades, only now with more pumping through the water projects, do they blame the striper for the demise of the delta smelt and salmon.
Funny how they demonize stripers, but dont say much about black bass...
