Surfers versus fisherman...

so tired of hei arguments. The pier was built as a fishing pier and surfers were supposed to stay away from the pier. If the city had enforced it's own rules this would not have become an ongoing battle.

It's a major issue I experienced at Manhatten Pier.

I have seen surfers get too close to the pier, going between the pilings to get to the other side, which is a no no, and the lifeguards are supposed to warn them but they don't do their job, it is also their fault. This is an unfortunate case, nobody should be hooked.

On Tuesday at Balboa pier, about 50 lifeguards in training, on surfboard went under the pier to go from one side to other.
I hollered at them to watch out for fishing lines. One who may have been the leader waved indicating it is ok!!!!

For lifeguard training I can kind-of understand... They need to know what they will be dealing with rescuing the idiots that surfed or swam under the pier.

Does anyone know why the "lineup" is so close to the pier? Is there something around the pier that forms nice waves?

I think I know why they surf close to the pier, partly or mostly for attention, girls would usually be checking them out and stuff, I have seen it.

Actually the pier structure does help shape the waves. That is the main reason they want to surf next to it. Not that they should.

I was fishing near Mission Beach and a surfer went right in front of where I was fishing with my steelhead outfit. He tore off several yards of drag before I could react. He glared at me and yanked the hook out of his wetsuit. I felt bad but was happy I didn't have to retie my rig.
