SF Bay Red Tide

We saw evidence of the red tide at the Kids Day on the Pier at the Marin Rod and Gun Club pier on Saturday when fishing was slow. Later, when I stoped at the Redwood City Pier, the city had the pier closed due, I am sure, to the red tide. Even the waters at the Fort Point Pier, Fort Baker Pier, and Elephant Rock Pier looked red.

Seeing lots of reports of dead fish in the bay and Lake Merritt, ranging from gobies to stripers and sturgeon. This fish kill is sad and unprecedented.

One naturalist I follow was speculating that the algal bloom may have been accelerated by an accidental discharge of nutrient rich water into the bay by local water treatment plants.

The number of dead fish being found is staggering. A large number of sturgeon, perhaps more green than white. Sturgeon are just the easiest thing most folks notice and can identify, and they wash up on shore at least partially intact, so they are getting counted. Plenty of stripers and baitfish as well. This project on iNaturalist is collecting observations. Lots of them.

It's pretty sad to see what's happening. The bay has had red tide events over the years, as have most coastal areas in California, but this may be the largest and most damaging seen in the bay.
