What is everyone going to be doing? I'm looking forward to trying for some lobster. I have a lobster style net now, and a lobster card. Anyone have plans for the opener?

To stay home. The piers that are somewhat successful are usually wall to wall. The local boat spots become a bumper boat battle zone. I will wait a few days.

Dang. Doesn't sound encouraging. Maybe I'll focus on metal detecting the beach that weekend instead. Was looking forward to first time lobstering too...

Great idea. What kind of detector do you have? I was thinking about bringing my AT Max.
I had a whites MXT but recently bought a Nokta Legend.
Nice to not have to worry about the water!
I'm curious to try the Legend with the small disk in areas known for nuggets... :)

I made the mistake of going on opening day on the pier. Think of it like going to the DMV, 626 night market, and a block party in the hood all in one. A lady made and enforced an invisible barrier that no one can enter. Others had yellow caution taped on the rails. Another lady dropped her net right on top of mine. When I told her politely NO, she cursed at me and called her whole family. Then, there a guy who literally walked in front of where I was sitting and started fishing and dropped his net. He wouldn't leave until I grabbed his rod and about to snap it in half. He did apologize and offer me a burger tho. Did I mentioned, all of this happened in one evening? What don't kill you only makes you stronger, right?

I did get 4 legals. One guy even got his limit. Hell, I might be dumb enough to do it again. Maybe.

I try to avoid opening night and also a few days later. It's just a cluster f**k of people. I love hanging out and meeting new people, but it can be too much. I actually have better results a few weeks later when the rush dies down.

Hopefully Ocean Beach Pier opens up. Its one of the better piers for hooping.

Which pier were you on? I've been to San Clemente on opening day and found it to be too crowded, so I just left without even setting up. Meanwhile, the Dana Point Pier does not seem to have too many anglers and is a great place to go on opening day. However, last time I was at Dana Point Pier on opening day, some local rowdy kids were jumping off the pier, disrupting the fishing and they waited until after the DFG had finished checking licenses and buckets to start.

Yeah they're still active. They sneak down and throw their rope ladder over one of the landing cleats and get a few jumps in before the lifeguard shoos them off. Can't think that they'd be there at night while people are lobster hooping though. Would be a bit chilly.

I think Mahigeer is still in Turkey. If not, I know he will be at avalon catching some bugs. I joined him last year. Was not too crowded though we did not catch too many.

Looks like the season is delayed in a good bit of Los Angeles, and warnings for domoic acid from Bolsa Chica up to Santa Monica... Think I'll definitely be passing on the opener. Maybe try to make bait instead... but where to go that isn't potentially contaminated and packed with lobster fishers?
