Ocean Beach Pier to Remain Closed for Repairs After Damage from High Surf

Welp, this is not good, another day another California pier down:
The Ocean Beach Pier will remain closed “until further notice” after several days of high surf damaged the popular pier.

The pier was closed at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday as an approaching Pacific storm pushed waves increasingly higher, eventually reaching 12 feet on Friday.

Pretty depressing time. There's some obvious damage but what is now going to be needed to be checked is the pilings themselves which already are a big concern to the city. Hard to say when that will happen given the stormy weather.

Something fishy is going with the ob pier and how they are quick to close it for any little reason. I get a feeling they're trying to run that concessionaire out of business ala some crystal pier type shenanigans.

It is hard to determine the extent of the damage from a single photo, but even just missing a section of rail could be a real liability problem. It seems strange when you consider that a lot of piers did not use to have any railing, but that was a different world.

The problems at Ocean Beach are twofold: (1) the latest damage is to the railings that will need to be fixed before opening, and (2) the greater problem, the structure itself. Many concrete pilings are showing wear and tear to an extent that some may not be safe. In addition, there is concrete breakage in many areas of the surface area. The city has approved money for a rebuild of the entire pier and many studies are currently taking place by a swarm of engineers. The planning stage itself may well take over a year and during that time, once repairs are done, it's hoped the pier can be reopened for angling. Once decisions are reached on a new pier then the pier will be closed and rebuilt. How long that will take is speculative at this point. I am offering advice when appropriate in regards to the wants/needs of fishermen and what we are hoping will happen.
