Monterey Wharf #2 Report

#1
I went fishing at the Monterey Wharf # 2 pier on Sunday. I fished from 9 am to 3 pm. The day started out great. Incoming tide in the morning and I caught 7 pacific mackerel really fast in the morning. I also lost two mackerel to seals. But then around 10 in the morning the bite shut off. I was fishing near the end of the pier, so moved out to where there were no rails and tried for mackerel and perch there. No other fish caught. One other angler caught a jacksmelt, and some anchovies were caught on Sibiki rigs. After a good start it ended up being a slow day. That is a tough pier to fish. At least I didn’t get skunked.

I tried shrimp and gulp sandworms around the pilings and no perch. Usually when I’m using bait around pier pilings something bites. I didn’t even catch or have my bait stolen by the senorita fish. I did bring motor oil grubs, but I never tried them.

When the wharf is slow, you can always fish the coastguard jetty which is nearby. You’ll at least get some rockfish & perch. Most people only fish the wharf if the baitfish/macs are thick or if there’s a run of stripers cruising through.

Funny you mentioned that cause I did exactly that today. I have a day off work and went to Wharf 2 to catch mackerel. I used a sabiki rig tip with squid. I got there around 10:30 AM and fished to 12:30 PM, no luck. I also saw couple of people fishing the pier with no luck. I then headed for lunch and then went to Coast Guard and fish for rock fish. I toss 1/2 jig with swimbait for 1/2 an hour with no luck. I then switch to squid and do bait and wait with no luck. I got skunked. It still beats a day at the office.

Any one knows if you can use the parking pass from Wharf 2 at Coast Guard Pier? Let say you pay for 5 hours of parking at Wharf 2, and the fish are not biting for an hour into fishing and you packed up and headed for Coast Guard Pier. Can you use the remaining 4 hours at Coast Guard Pier?

I've had the same question and used the same parking ticket at both places but I do remember that each ticket lists the specific place you are parking. But don't take my word as a defintive answer. Perhaps a local has a better answer on how the tickets are viewed?
