Issue with ads...

Ken,

Wasn't sure where to post this, so here it is...

I know that the ads are necessary for the site generate revenue and, hopefully, cover operating costs at the least, but
they seem to be getting a bit out of hand, at least on my screen.
I have an ad bar at the top of the page, the bottom of the page, and when I'm reading posts there will be two different
ad bars inserted into the context of the post.

Oh, and sometimes two massive streamers drop down from the top vertically from two different locations on the top of
the page.

They are pretty much all ads for Temu.

Just wanted to make you aware of this if you were not already.

Thanks!

Wow. I run Firefox on a Mac and I see no ads at all. I have an extension called Ghostery that blocks trackers, and Firefox also does this to some extent. I think privacy settings on most browsers can be adjusted to block ads. Have you checked settings recently?

I didn't see anything in the site-settings that related to the ads. I generally don't use ad-block because I want the sites I visit and enjoy to be able to earn money from my views. Just wondering if the admin here might have been a little aggressive in the implementation of the ads which seem to be getting more prevalent.

It is weird to me that the ad is ALWAYS for Temu though. Is it the same for everyone else?

*** Edit *** Okay, now when I click other internal links (ie going from this page to the home page) I'm getting a pop-up that covers the entire page until I click outside the frame or close the ad... Not 100% of the time but some times.

*** Edit 2 *** Okay now I finally got an ad that wasn't Temu (which is a really risky company to buy anything from if you read any of their reviews...) but now they are all back to the same thing. Weird.

I usually watch the site on my home computer, use Firefox, and do not see any ads. I also just checked my IPhone and do not see any ads on Firefox.

However, I just looked on both my home computer and IPhone using Safari and do indeed see ads, a variety but some big ones for Temu.

I don't know why it's like that. I'll check with Rich and see what he says.

I went to a Temu ad and hit the x at the far right. I then hit "stop seeing this ad." Next I hit "ad was inappropriate." Got a message—Will not show this ad again.

There's still ads on Safari but they're mostly fishing related ads or car ads. Don't know if it will stay that way.

It's a start.

Yep, I'm not really getting anything outside of fishing/gear on Safari. At work, chrome is a lot of random stuff though, but I guess it's 'cause different PC and different search history. Currently it's mostly sports equipments since I've been looking into getting new running shoes I guess!

I have seen this type of advertisement, very intrusive and annoying, enough to put them on the side of the screen, but when they pop up the whole screen and make you have to close them or wait for them to close it is beyond annoying. They (the developers) haven't got a clue how people will react to these type of ads, in my case I will just ignore what it is about and shut the page off, or worse yet I will not shop or deal with the company in that ad, ever.

I will also never ever buy anything from TEMU because of these horrible ads (well, also because reading about them online it seems like they are kind of a shitty company too).

The ads are a necessary evil. They drive the desired content. One of my favorite hobbies is tearing all the ads I can out of a new copy of Readers' Digest. As I've gotten older I tend to pause at the medical ads.
My dad hated the ads in the LA Times so much he switched to the Herald Examiner.
Growing up, I loved the tiny Johnson Smith ads in the back of the comic books. No to mention the 2 man submarine, tank and assorted monkeys, alligators and x-ray glasses 🤣

This is the reason I don't use ad-block, etc. My problem isn't the existence of the ads, but rather the implementation of how they seem to hold the content hostage.

Of course, when I was a kid, ads had a certain appeal. I wanted to buy one of these nuclear submarines. At $6.98, it seemed like a pretty foolproof deal to me. sub.png

So I just wanted to post a screenshot of how the front-page looks to me on chrome. This isn't as bad as it can be,
as sometimes the drop-down ad shows both on the left and the right.

This isn't a problem with this website. It is a problem with your choice of browser, lack of modifying your privacy settings and using extensions to protect your privacy. I use firefox and brave browser and see zero ads on here. Chrome is the least privacy friendly browser and I stopped using it years ago. They are collecting cookies, info from all websites you visit and targeting those ads at you.

()*&@(^$ wow.
Switched to Mozilla and... there is some shady crap going on there.
So I DO have my privacy settings in Chrome at a reasonable level. 3rd party cookies disabled. Delete cookies after closing browser. Etc etc etc.
But... There is apparently some kind of horrible synergy between double-click (a google company) and chrome (owned by google) based on how the ads were being displayed. Now my question is whether or not pierfishing.com is receiving any of the revenue from those ads I was being served.
The experience after switching to a different browser with equivalent privacy settings is night and day. I started using chrome back when the other main competitor was IE (which was a load of crap and the main reason I refuse to give Edge a chance). Guess my primary browser is Mozilla.
I still won't be using ad-blockers and such because I want sites I visit to make money, so hopefully this experience with Mozilla will carry through.

Guys I don't have the answers to the issue with ads. I wish we didn't even have to have ads (and we didn't for most of the years) but we need the money that is generated even if it is a relatively small amount.

What about getting specific local CA companies, tackle shops etc to pay to advertise on the website? Most people take offense to the way google and other companies go about sneakily stealing and hoarding our info from our internet usage and that's the main issue.
Might take some more managing of the website, but that's how google lures you in with the easier options. I'm more likely to patronize companies that advertise that way.

Same reason that I don't use ad-blockers, etc. But, apparently, google is doing some really (borderline?!?) unethical
things with their browsers to make sure that you have to look at the ads to get them out of the way of the things you
actually want to see. I switched to Mozilla and the problem is gone now.
