Herring spots near San Mateo?

I might be up in San Mateo in January, and I was wondering if there's been any herring spawn action around there in recent years. I'm just wondering about general tips where I might have some luck. If you have a personal fave secret spot, I respect your right to not share it.

I think you need to be alert to where they are spawning so you can rush over there to hit it before they
get done and leave...

Otherwise it'll be hit and miss. Don't forget your cast-net!
