Gathered for the 4th consecutive year at Newport Beach with family to watch the super bowl and fish at Balboa Pier.

On Friday morning I went solo to the pier. Overcast, slightly windy, some rain, and cold. My efforts were rewarded with 4 Thornback Rays, 2 Round Rays and 1 Bullhead.

On Saturday I was joined by my son in law. We caught 7 Thornback Rays, 3 Round Rays, 1 Jacksmelt and 1 Lizardfish.

A few Sardines and Topsmelt caught by a mother and her son. The Sardines arrived around 1 p.m. Saw a few small schools of bait fish too. Several fishermen targeting Halibut but no catches of any size.

Took a break on Sunday for church and the big game.

Monday I was joined by my wife for our last day of fishing. The morning was sunny, warm and no wind. Beautiful day to be on the pier. Surprisingly, there were quite a few fishermen on the pier.

Between my wife and I we landed 1 Thornback Ray, 1 Round Ray, 1 Mackerel, 11 Jacksmelt and 2 Spider crabs.

Majority of the fish were caught on hi-lo rigs, #4 baithooks, using cut bait - anchovies and shrimp.

Nature also shared her glory with the sighting of a whale and a pod of dolphins passing by. We also saw an Octopus moving around the mussel on a pier piling.

Overall a fun relaxing trip and a great final day of enjoyment on the pier.

Good luck fishing!

They are edible. I tried to eat one many years ago. The meat was stringy and blue/green in color. Not very much meat for the size of the crab. Mostly shell. So now I release any I catch.
