Hey yawl! First time long time. Fished the Balboa Pier on Sunday the 4th. Caught a tiny smelt and another decent sized fish that put up a nice fight. Not sure what fish it is, any help appreciated.

. Looks like an undersized White Sea Bass.

If you go to the pier on Tuesday or Thursday, you can meet Snookie (our halibut lady on this board) there.
She can be a great help with fish ID.

I hope the fish went back. The best way to protect yourself, if not sure what it is, to take picture like you did, release the fish (I hope you did) and ask here , like you did.

Cool. Usually I catch mackerel, and yes both fish were caught and released.

Yes, looks like a small white seabass.

Cool, I have never seen a juvenile white seabass.
