Balboa Pier Sep 3

Got out to the pier around 10am, the beach was packed to the gills! No parking anywhere as usual! After spending 40 mins finally found a parking spot on the street which cost me about $15 for 3 hours, much more than the Palm st lot!

Anyhoo- it was windy, really windy! The water was nasty red tide. Everyone was only able to fish the south side of the pier. Didn’t see much caught, a small round ray at the end near Rubys. A guy at the shallowest part of the surf got a good size 15” corbina on small cocktail shrimp.
As for me, tried to catch some live bait first, some smelt, all too large to use as bait around 8-10”. There was small scattered schools being chased by a group of about 5 fat white fish, don’t know what they were but they were chasing up and down the pier. All underneath the pier was millions of baby walleye (i think!) and couldnt keep them off my sabiki. The red tide cleared towards the wedge somewhat, at least the area directly around the pier, started to get a few bites, a couple 6” baby macks, a tiny baby Tom Cod, and a little Lizard fish, which promptly sent me packing…it was fun even though the wind was crazy and the water was red…maybe next week the bones will show up 🤞

Glad something was biting, despite the red tide. I grew up surf fishing at Bolsa Chica and loved catching the Barred and Walleye Surfperch. I'm happy to hear that they're biting again.
