I stopped by for a short recon session, wanted to see what has been going on since the brown red tide washed away. I was there from about 730am - 10am, sorry no pics, i always forget 😩
The wind was pretty relentless, currents were very strong and a lot of wave action, lots of chop on the surface, tough fishing conditions, but it was a good day to go fishing, one of those days it seemed like everyone was catching something. Water was fairly clear and starting to warm up.
A lot of anglers out on the pier, good to see so many families out having fun and fishing. Starting at the whitewater, the snaggers have a bunch of fish, white croakers and mullet? And big 8”-10” smelt along with the normal smaller ones.
Near the wood gates before the benches, i see a pier regular there, with 4 rods strapped to the rail, all baited up with smelt, he was up to 3 short halibuts, 2 small white sea bass under 20”, all of which he tossed back.
Mid pier around 8-9am, there was pretty good white croaker action being caught on mussels, it seemed like it would never end, but it did shut off close to 9am.
Tons of smelt everywhere, but sardines, mackerel, grunion, anchovies were MIA. No signs of Bonito yet.
At the pier end, I did spot what looked like a mini school of small barracuda at the surface, i tossed a kroc and a rapala at them with no luck. Good sized fat Spanish macks at Rubys, 6”-10” and fat stomachs.
As for me, 1 short butt, a few croakies, a few gigantic smelt, everything tossed back in the water.
3 sport fishing boats not far from us at the pier, looked like they were doing good out there, im guessing they were picking bass and sculpins
