With the water looking great last week, made a quick late morning trip Tues 8/29 to Balboa after quick morning hike in Irvine. Pier was swamped with red tide bands, tide still receding. Micro-smelt in the water, nothing chasing it and nobody catching anything on the end.
Ran quick over to Newport and the pier was in a nice bubble with red tide north, south and outside but a large swath of water around pier was just a bit murky. A lot more life with micro smelt, adult top smelt and black balls of sardines or anchovies drifting around in the current, nothing chasing the bait, and nothing chasing lures. A few good sized macs and top smelt being caught, and a nice pod of dolphin hugging pretty close to pier.
8-30 - Hit the HB Pier at Sunset to check out the Moon, lots of moon watchers and a surprising number of anglers mid-pier and at the end. Bait and sabiki anglers were slowly but consistently catching macs, didn't see any micro-bonito in with the mackerel.
Red tide Chlorophyl sat image attached, it's really bad off San Diego, but I hear the bait fish are massing in the heavy chlorophyl and the pelagics are chasing them into the dirty water
Have a great Labor Day Weekend!
