pilchards are same as sardines. Mouth is different from sardine to anchovy. To me, sardines have a more shad/tarpon like mouth vs anchovies have the filter feeder style head of an extremely large mouth and blunted nose.

Looking at the head, I know for sure it's an anchovy...my guess is deep body anchovy

I'm no expert, but it looks like a european green crab. Kelp crabs are more slender looking I believe. Alarming if it is a green crab.

that was the first place I remembered fishing. My first catch was a lowly sand dab, mid pier off of some shrimp. That's also where i went back to fish again when I got back into pierfishing later on in life. Wish the pier held up better, but I have a lot of great memories of that place.

Local tackle shops should have squid “snaggers” too. Think sabiki but with small glow squid jigs. That should work wonders!!

I completely understand what you mean. I just found it surprising how they stated that they intend to try to rebuild the stocks after all the ruckus with low water/low salmon/low delta smelt. Hope all has been well with you!!!

I suggest pack light if you do intend to venture past the bend. It was one real sketchy rock that you need to get over. It's going to be hard to compare to the mole honestly, but I do feel dana would produce better numbers than Newport just based off the smaller amount of foot traffic you get...

That jetty is very productive. However, it's also pretty sketchy getting past the bend due to both bird poop and how the rocks are. Once you make it past the bend it eases up. There's also a short jetty on the other side of the harbor.

wife hates it when I clean fish at home, but when i need to, I "wash/rub" my hands with a bunch of coins and it seems to significantly reduce the smell. I believe another friend of mine used to use a stainless steel "bar soap" to do the same thing.
