    Bonito?

That would be nice, but that's not my experience since the 80's. They usually bite into Aug then as the water temps hit 70s they stop biting artificials and mainly target bait. They follow the bait balls up the coast, but The bait situation is grimm, water temps are all over the place, I just...

    The Wedge 10/23

Yikes! I think I'll stick with the piers  Great job hangin' in there. Thurs was tough with the early wind on Balboa (7am), still lots of bonito but just breezing through the smelt, rarely hitting artificials or live bait, but I heard today was a good bite on Newport!

    Balboa Pier - Tue 10-20-2020

Actually the entire schools are coming up to the surface, I had many passes of 5-6lb fish, can see them crystal clear

    Balboa Pier - Tue 10-20-2020

Still picking away. Same conditions for weeks now. Warm clear water, lots of smelt and a lot of Bonito (various size fish) schools swimming around and NOT hitting jigs or live bait. Been getting consistent slow pick on splasher+feather, nothing else. Been targeting the AM high tide, 2-3 hrs...

    Balboa Pier - Tu/Th 9/29 & 10/1

Thanks for the advice. Always looking for new ways to catch fish. Picked up coltsniper/jigpara slow jigging this season. Actually 2 observations this year: Live Bait: Though I don't like the added work of live bait fishing (extra rod for sabiki, water changes to keep bait alive) and usually the...

    Balboa Pier - Tu/Th 9/29 & 10/1

Sooooo FRUSTRATING! Great water conditions, tons of smelt and fair numbers of Bonito breezing through the smelt, lots of feather strikes but no fish. They are so timid, all hookups were temporary. Lots of mini-macs but that's not my thing. The Bonito were boiling through the smelt packing into...

    Newport Pier 9/20

On Balboa, In the last 5 years or so the small Bonito hit ion the sabikis like mackerel and they fill up buckets with tiny Bonito now catching up tp 6 or 7 at a time, saw it again this year. I try to shame them into knowing the 5-fish limit and what they are doing and sometimes, on rare...

    12 pound halibut caught

Were the cormorants bothersome? They were stealing baits and grabbing peoples small macs at Balboa and Huntington

    Balboa Pier 9/15

Nice!, it was SLOW for Bonito on Mon, lots of mack (small, med and HUGE) and large sardines and jacksmelts, plenty of small smelts around pier but no Bonito activity in the bait, or on splasher, spoon or jigs. I got 1 double on blind splasher strike after 4p + a couple misses and that was it for...

Sea temps at 77 degrees in La Jolla

Yeah Wed was DEAD off the end, lots of tiny smelt but nothing chasing it but cormorants. Tried splasher, croc and jig/feather in all directions for several hours, not any interest, not even from the tiny barracuda or needle fish that were around the week before.

    Balboa Pier 7/31

Yeah the water turned on Thurs. Rode my bike down the river trail on Wed with and ultralight setup and tossed crocs. The water was clear with lots of smelt around the pier and the large balls of large sardines rolling through. The micro Bonito were tearing through the smelt by the pier pilings...

Bonito Run to Beat All Previous runs at Balboa Pier Yesterday

Not Today, Macs only, NO Bonito activity on bait, splasher or iron. Even the half day boats that were limiting on bones scratched hard and the bite seemed to move back South, Oceanside boats did well today

Bonito Run to Beat All Previous runs at Balboa Pier Yesterday

The conditions were the anglers, bait and pelagics all arrived at the same time. Thurs saw Tons of smelt with roving pods of 5" sardines, the Bonito were slamming all the bait, along with some of the lures tossed out. Fri had much smaller amount of smelt amassing around the pier. The water (at...
