11a-2p - Water stabilized for a few days 64-65. On incoming Loooooog 14 hr single tide shift, sunny with light SSW winds. Heavy smelt mass from surf to end of pier, both sides.
Water looked clear-ish with light bands of red-tide, nothing was corralling the smelt they were spread out away from...
Wow the water started turning over on entire LA/OC coastline last week closing the door the the warming up bite on Bonito
Thu 9/26 - 10a-1p - Water 65F (brrr down from 70 prev week) On outgoing tide, overcast to sunny, mild wind. Plenty of clusters of micro-smelt and sardine balls still passing...
It's weird weather today! Delayed my departure due to intermittent rain inland, arrived 11:15a and it was dry, sunny with blue skies over the water. What few anglers were left were not catching anything, haven't seen a mackerel in a week.
It was glassy with NO wind until 12p with the clouds...
Like @Rusty experienced bite is tough, just have keep at it and pick away at them. Basic conditions hold, lots of micro smelt on surface, large balls of BIG sardines passing through hugging the bottom, Bonito boiling through the smelt
Thu 9/12 was windy SSE wind, smelt on both sides of the...
Definitely come in waves and you have to be there with what they are willing to bite when they appear, and each day is different. I too have not experienced anything wide open yet.
Interesting for me, I like to check bonito stomach contents when cleaning and there is a wide variety of food out...
Been periodically checking out the pier last 2 months since seeing posts of tiny Bonito at Huntington, Newport and the Wedge, nothing until finally connecting last week.
I always monitor all around from sinks for bait activity. Conditions looked good with decent volume of top smelt hugging the...
Wow, I started fishing Newport in late 70's, never seen or caught a hake, I had to look it up! Reminds me of my own experience taking the 2hr bus ride with all my fishing equipment from Fullerton to Newport, I kind if miss fishing the pier with no railing, a little hint of vertigo with every cast =)
With the water looking great last week, made a quick late morning trip Tues 8/29 to Balboa after quick morning hike in Irvine. Pier was swamped with red tide bands, tide still receding. Micro-smelt in the water, nothing chasing it and nobody catching anything on the end.
Ran quick over to...
Tried again on Fri before storm, similar situation except:
* Water was VERY clear
* Not even smelt being caught
* Only tiny lizard fish being caught near surface on sabikis with varying feature sizes (bait to mack/bonito sizes)
Tried all corners of end: LC110, splasher, jig + feather sabiki...
Balboa is still damaged from Winter storms, cross-beam still dragging into water under Ruby's trash bin corner, creaking as it moves with the swell, anyone hear anything about it's repair?
Fished then incoming tide starting 5p.
Wind and swell were moderate, water was murky with clouds of murkyness in the current, sunny so could see the large numbers of micro-smelt hugging the pier like last week. Worked lures on all 4 sides of the end. Few anglers, but spread out in all...
