Balboa Pier Thu 9/19 mass smelt/grunion gone - still tough bite - lots of life in the water

It's weird weather today! Delayed my departure due to intermittent rain inland, arrived 11:15a and it was dry, sunny with blue skies over the water. What few anglers were left were not catching anything, haven't seen a mackerel in a week.

It was glassy with NO wind until 12p with the clouds, also no mass of top smelt but I could see the balls of large sardines passing through. I saw a sea turtle surface headed toward Newport, they a dolphin strafed the end of the pier, then later in the session a BIG Mola Mola drifted south in the current. It was so frustrating not being able to get a picture of the Mola on my phone.

I am now convinced the mass of smelt piled up on the pier the last week were surging with grunion, I heard from those at the pier on Wed that the smelt were still there and the Bonito bite was strong later in the day, then after the full moon, they are gone.

As for fishing I only had 2 followers on splasher and nothing on Kroc, then around 1p the sun came back out and the bite started. From 1p-2p I got 6 on deck and lost/missed a dozen atleast, all on splasher, no chrome strikes today. The Bonito were of the smaller 11" variety with 1 super-micro my wife will love the fry whole. Some of the missed passes and strikes were the 14"-15" variety I was catching 2 days ago

Keep on casting!
