What some probably didn't know about Boyd is he and his family used to build hot rods for track racing

I had many a long talk with Boyd as we shared the railing at Goleta and he had many an interesting tale about his life and his family. He was one of the few people that I've ever met who truly practiced what he preached. He was a man of peace, worked hard to protect the environment (in many ways), and did more for the Goleta Pier than all the S.B. park personnel that have overseen it for years. His loss was one that touched me personally and he's missed.

I was caught thinking of the person that introduced to me to this site, 20 years ago, Mr. Boyd Grant. I met him while fishing the Goleta Pier, while I was attending UCSB. We had many fun conversations on the pier and shared some nice hookups. Today, I was looking towards Big Sur and recalled how he introduced me to some spots there to fish, which I frequent once in a while, now that I live on the Central Coast. Thanks for your friendship and will always value your insight and kindness to others.

And to Mr. Ken Jones: my dad knew you from your teaching days at Anderson Valley High School. I am from Cloverdale, and my dad was the eventual High School Principal there. Your work with the Small school classic basketball tournament is not forgotten! My two favorite piers will likely always remain Point Arena, and Goleta!

Good to have you aboard again and you mention two subjects I hold dear, Boyd and the time I spent in Boonville. I've written much about Boyd but little about my time at the school as a teacher, coach, athletic director and tournament director of the Redwood Classic. The tournament had 16 teams and I was the tournament director for about 15 years. We liked to claim it was the biggest small school tournament in the west. I was proud to develop the "Tournament Program" that was acclaimed the best among both small and large schools, and oversaw the growth of the tournament to a point where every year saw several of the best small schools in the state and saw teams invited from other states like Washington, Utah and South Carolina. I am most proud of the Ken Jones Sportsmanship Trophy because I valued the sportsmanship and friendships as important as the wins. I have tried to bring that sense of community to this site as well. We are not always successful but have, I think, a group of anglers that are generally both avid anglers and conservationists.
