Variety — the spice of life.

One reason I like the Cabrillo Mole — a variety of different species has become one of my favorite measurements for what I consider “fun” fishing, thus the following data. The highest number of species I have recorded on a single California pier on one visit is 16 different species. However, when I am on my coastal pier fishing trips, I will sometimes hit (or at least used to hit) three or more piers in a day’s time. Sometimes the daily total, factoring in the species from each pier, can be higher, especially when making a transition between central and southern California piers. Sometimes I would stay in the Morro Bay/Pismo Beach area overnight, get up early and hit a pier or two in that area and then head down to Gaviota/Goleta/Stearns, etc. On those days you would sometimes see a considerable difference in fish species, the colder-water central California species and the warmer-water southern California species. I keep two sets of figures—single-day, single-pier species and single-day, multi-pier species. As a general rule the latter will be higher figures although the main exception to this rule is the Cabrillo Mole on Catalina that almost always yields a high number of different species. It's one reason why the Mole is one of my favorite piers.
