A few days apart can make a difference at your favorite fishing spot. Wednesday October 27, I arrived to pier, at 5:30 a.m., to large swells and strong underwater current. Fished until 12 p.m. Tally for this day was 2 Thornback Rays and 4 plastic bag "fish". Literally no fish action. Many fisherman packed up and left around 8 a.m. I had the end of the pier to myself from 11 to 12. No mackerel, no smelt, nothing. I believe the strong ocean current that was kicking up sand and making the water cloudy and lots of seaweed contributed to the non existent fish action. Fast forward to Saturday October 30. Wife and I arrived at 5:45 a.m. The ocean was calm and water clarity was decent. Shark fisherman had set up early and their girlfriends were catching mackerel for bait. Good sign fish were around. We fished until 1 p.m. Our tally was 3 Bat Rays, 1 Thornback Ray, several Jacksmelt and lots of mackerel. The mackerel were running large today with several up to 14 inches. Largest macks I've seen at SB this year. There was some excitement (especially for the sharkers) when a Thresher shark was spotted near the pier.

My son in law caught his first Bat Ray and he was on cloud nine! I introduced him to pier fishing last October and he is hooked!!!

A good day fishing. I'm grateful!
