Today saw day one of the southland fishing trip and I fished the Cabrillo Mole from 10:30--5:30. Unfortunately it was one of the slowest days I have ever had at the Mole even though the weather was beautiful. Seven hours of fishing produced only 22 fish—6 senorita, 5 halfmoon, 4 sheephead, 4 kelp bass, 1 rock wrasse, 1 blacksmith and 1 garibaldi. Many of the normal species simply were not there. This included no opaleye, no ocean whitefish, no mackerel or bonito (although they said mackerel had been biting the previous day). As for the species caught they were in far smaller numbers (even the kelp bass) than usual and were hesitant to bite. The good news was the sheephead. The first one was an undersized female, the second was a nineteen-inch male, the third was a 15-inch male, and the final sheephead was a 13-inch fish making the transition from female to male. Thus three legal-size sheephead and the larger two fish filleted with the fillets nestled in baggies sitting on ice. We will see what tomorrow brings.
