Saturday, August 26, from 10:00 until 12:00 is the "Kids Day on the Pier" at the Marin Rod & Gun Club. If bringing a kid try to be there by no later than 9:30 and expect to stay until 1:00-1:15 (for the food and prizes).

Kids 6-15 are eligible to participate and there will be ten age group winners with each receiving a trophy and a copy of my book. Loaner rods and reels will be available as well as free bait. After the event there will be a hot dog lunch, the announcement of the winners, and a raffle in which every youngster should be able to walk away with a rod and reel.

Adults accompanying the kids are not expected to fish during the event although some usually do after the event is over. Be aware that this is a private pier and a fishing license is required for anyone 16 years of age or older.

Volunteers: As always we hope to have some volunteers from PFIC. Primary duties will be setting up the loaner equipment and serving as judges.

I think based upon the time of the derby volunteers should show up by about 8:45 if helping with the loaner tackle; 9:00 if planning on being a judge.

Some volunteers may register entrants at the main booth outside the pier but I think we have enough volunteers for that.

Volunteers usually organize/set up loaner rods from PFIC and the ones that MRGC have as loaner rods

Volunteers tie leaders on the rods with like single or double dropper loops and attach pre-snelled hooks (Robert sometimes ties a few rigs as slider rigs (Carolina/fish-finder).

Pass out some bait to kids - usually anchovies/squid pre-cut (or MRGC/PFIC cuts and baggies).

Give some brief instruction on methodology: how and where to cast/tactics/safety.

Collect rods where line breaks, rig breaks and give children a different rod or re-tie the line.

Collect catch data and judge/score the catch. This requires walking up and down the pier and taking weight or measurement and marking the data on the score cards. If possible, also contact Ken to come take photos or taking a photo with cell phone and texting it for proof.

Generally, some of the volunteers will stay after the event and fish from the private pier that is normally is closed to non-club members.

I was told yesterday they've been catching quite a few fish from the pier. It should be better than last year when red tide was in the area.

The day was a success by most measurements although fewer kids showed up than registered. Quite a few fish caught and everyone seemed to have a great time.
