Chapter 1 — It started simple enough...

To: PFIC Message Board; Posted by WhiteCroakerCommandr; Subject: The best darn pier fish in So. Cal!!!

My vote goes for the White Croaker! If you add up the pluses and minuses....the White Croaker beats out all other fish including halibut, dogfish, and even albeecore. My biggest to date has gone 4 lbs, caught on a piece of marinated octopus. They even cure itchy head. I used to have the itchiest head around, but ever since I've started catching and eating numerous quantities of these silvery little Titans, my itchy head has vanished! White Croaker Commander has spoken!

Posted by zen

I think it’s because of all the toxins that you have ingested from eating those white croaker that made your itch stop. It may have killed the nerves on your head that’s why you don’t feel the itch anymore.... I just don’t trust the croakers, specially with the numerous warnings posted on the piers and DFG booklet.

White croaker recipe:

• first filet your fresh white croakers
• then place filets atop a hickory plank
• brush your filets and plank with garlic + butter
• add salt and pepper to taste
•place the plank and fillets in the broiler
• broil at full power for 1 full hour
• best hickory plank you have ever eaten !!!! jp

I took one of those babies home when I was a kid. I cut it open and there were small worms visible in the flesh. Even then I had enough sense to discard it.

Posted by harukan

Awww!!! Damn--too bad you didn't know "WhiteCroakerCommandr;" you could have given it to him, and then he could have claimed that the worms cured his athlete's foot.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

They're good that way steamed. I prefer the white croaker. Steamed, they are excellent eating. The closer to Palos Verdes, the better they seem to taste! They are also excellent raw. You know, white croakers have gotten a bad rap lately. They deserve a break.

Posted by harukan

Hey, Kyle!! I guess this answers your question about Mr. Itchy Head: He's BAAAAA-AAAAACCCCKK!

Posted by stinkyfingers

Yeah, I love white croaker too...especially with all the lice on my head. It's like they feed on it and they stop bothering me. I don't hardly even itch on my head anymore!

Posted by baitfish

Flavor not the issue...White croaker are highly resistant to toxic substances, they are the cockroach of the ocean. The problem is that they retain the toxins from their environment and are more than happy to give them to us when we eat them. So to paraphrase Samuel Jackson... Croaker may taste like pumpkin pie, but I wouldn't know cause I wouldn’t eat the filthy.... Baitfish And they don't taste good anyway

Posted by harukan

Despite DFG's warning, I ate a couple of croakers I caught from S.F. bay just to see what they tasted like, and they're unfit to eat. Their flesh is mushy and it has an unpleasant metallic taste--and according to my fishing book, that's true even if they come from unpolluted water; it's just the way they taste. Blecch! WhiteCroakerCommandr can have 'em all, and welcome!

And then...in reply to "Does anyone find keeping a fishing log helps?"

I sometimes fish in the Salton Sea and catch big, big White Croaker, except with orange mouths. I usually need a bat or a "log" to knock them out and keep them from flipping all over the place.

Posted by shorepounder

The Salton Sea has white croaker, tilapia, sargo, and the big attraction is the orangemouth corvina (not corbina). Shorepounder <"))){

It looks like a giant White Croaker...He must have been using marinated octopus for bait!

Posted by captdevo

White Croaker is tasty; you just sprinkle on some salt and pepper and pop it right in the trash can.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

DONT KNOCK IT TIL YOU TRY IT/YEAH...They are very good eating. I prefer them to most other pier fish including smoothhound, cookiecutter shovelnose and batray wings, and even opaleye! I would not throw them in the trash. To me, that is just a waste.

Chapter 2 — The momentum grew...

January 31, 2001; Posted by Mola Joe; Subject: I found the bonito!!

Seen this on another site. It seems that Japan has a craving for bonito on their plates. Japan wrapped over 300,000 metric tons of Pacific bonito last year (over 600,000,000 lbs) and every year they have been increasing their catch. This does not include the bonito caught by the Mexican fleet and sold to Japan. Most of these fish are caught out in the open ocean, intercepting their migration route. Come on guys, how about letting a few fish go by, I've just about forgotten what a 6-pound bonito looks like.

Posted by stinkyfingers

Gouge, rape, exploit, destroy, and then run along to new fresh pastures to rape. It eats me up. Here we are—civilized humans, but they feel the need for MORE, MORE, MORE, until it's all GONE! Or until restrictions are put on it. This will be sad world in the future. I can see it now—ALL ANIMALS are on the endangered and almost extinct list because humans do not know how to do things in moderation. I wish some of these people would just bite the cyanide pill.

Posted by baitfish

That figures, I even remember when it was pretty common to go out and hook up with a 5-6 pound bonito. I love those fish pound for pound, they are one of the best local fighters! The funniest part is that they are generally considered to be as edible as mackerel. Baitfish

Humans—smart enough to find ways to protect/prolong life but too stupid to accept the responsibility that goes along with that intelligence and control our exponential population growth.

Posted by stinkyfingers

It really sums it up well. I can see have a similar appreciation for world around us. Not just the fish, either. I'm talking about the hills, mountains, lakes, streams, mammals, reptiles, trees—the whole nine.

Posted by Whitecroakercommandr

Bonita?!! Yechh, who would eat that! They should try white croaker! There much more delicious and nutritous!

Posted by twkca

They are good if bled when caught. Barbeque them. They are also tops in smoked fish

Posted by Whitecroakercommandr

Barbacued bonita does not sound good to me! You should try White Croaker one of these days. I clean them and put them in a blender and make White Croaker balls. Poached, they can't be beat, especially if you dip them in a Velveeta-Jalapeno fondue! Don't knock it til you try it and I should not knock bonita eihter.

Cabrillo is my number one choice. There is plenty of white croakers for everyone. Macks too.

Posted by stinkyfingers

On my way!! I have got to get one of those White Croakers!! I've never caught one, and don't know how...but from all the things you say they must be GREAT! I'm getting very excited now, and I wish I lived down there so I could try it out. Hey, do you think if I eat some it could help me with this little “psycho-reaction” problem that I have with my temper???

Posted by Salty Nick

Stinky, eating the white croaker may, in fact, exacerbate this "psycho-reaction" problem and may add the side-effect of making you emit uncontrollable croaking sounds from various body parts. But then again, I am not a doctor or a psychiatrist, so don't quote me on that. Perhaps Whitecroakercommandr may have more insight on this...Salty.

Posted by stinkyfingers

I'm sold! Who do write the check to? Give me two tickets to Cabrillo. White Croaker—prepare to meet your doom! I just hope I don't get head lice between here and there, but if I do—the croaker will come to my rescue!

Posted by Mola Joe

Please, just say no to white croaker. I've seen first hand what these fish can do to a person. Please for your safety and the safety of others, stay away. Once you start, just like smoking the rock, you loose all control. Just say NO!!!!

Posted by Ken Jones

Stinkyfingers, are you sure your computer name didn't come from handling these fish, a.k.a. kingfish in the Bay Area. By the way, an alternative name for them is Pasadena trout and sewer trout; not too sure what Pasadena thinks about that. They do love to hang around sewer outfall areas and appear to thrive on the material/food that emerges. Good luck. Won't cure your temper, but--

Posted by harukan

It will go a long way toward helping you mount an insanity defense if you lose your temper and maim/injure/kill somebody.

Posted by mobilesuit

Won't cure your temper, but—so what does eating white croaker do to you? Get you high?

Posted by harukan

Maybe if you smoked it? Ha!—the next drug craze! Pushers on street corners hawking croakers ("Hey, man, got croak--FRESH, too!")—narcs prowling the shores, looking for people catching croakers—junkies stoned on "croak"—a whole generation of "croak babies"—newspaper headlines about the latest "croak bust."

Posted by Red Fish

Just say no to croak!

Posted by stinkyfingers

Now I HAVE to go catch one...just to see why it's hated so damn much. You know, I really do hear of people "targeting" this fish! What's up with that?

Posted by jason chin

It's the King of the Fish hehe

Posted by baitfish

Croakemometer. Need a cheap thermometer?!?! Take one White Croaker and put it in a glass tube with degree markings, and it will croak once every 10 degrees. Much cheaper than those Magellan Thermometers. Baitfish

Posted by harukan

God only knows what's "up with that"--can't imagine why anyone would want to target white croakers. Actually, I ate one just to see what they were like. They're not BAD, but they're not GOOD, either. The flesh is mushy and has a metallic taste--not really yucky, but enough to make you think, "Hmm, this really isn't all that good--so why am I even eating it?" Compared to all the other delicious fish there are, croaker is something to eat only if (a) you are very hungry, and (b) have nothing else. Actually, most of the people I see catching them on piers and keeping them look as if that might be the case.

Posted by Mola Joe

The issue here in Santa Monica Bay with the white croaker is they're almost ready to glow with the amount of toxins they carry. Out of all the fish tested in the bay, they're the worst. Most piers have signs that warn people not to eat them, but people just fill their buckets anyway. They seem to frequent the area right off the point, where we have our biggest problem with DDT and PCB's. The small ones make great halibut bait, but I'll pass on the tom cod on the menu.

Posted by baitfish

They also have a high resistance to mercury and other heavy metals, so they are a fish you want to avoid. I wouldn't eat one, unless I absolutely had to, and last time I checked I wasn't on Survivor. Tight Lines,

Posted by Ken Jones

The good news is that most of the white croaker (kingfish on the central coast and in the Bay Area, tom cod in the south) are fine to eat along much of the central coast. The toxins are not an issue as they are in the L.A. Area and in the Bay Area, and in the cold waters of the central coast they seem to have a much firmer flesh than in the south. Still, they're not much when compared to most other fish. By the way, although considered superior to white croaker, the other members of the family—yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, black croaker and corbina—typically also contain toxins in their system since they also tend to eat the bottom organisms (worms, clams, etc.) that contain the toxins. It's simply a matter of the toxins working their way up the food chain. However, since most white seabass (another croaker) frequent different environments they are generally considered much safer to eat. By the way, the croakers on the East Coast are different though similar species.

February 15, 2001; Posted by Mola Joe; Monster halibut caught in harbor

Press Telegram reported today that a 42-lb halibut was caught right next to bait receiver in Long Beach Harbor. The guy was fishing with a live white croaker (sorry whitecroakercommander) when he hooked up. I have friends who target halibut in the harbor on the San Pedro side, and these guys do really well just a few minutes from the launch ramp on their small inflatables. Another sleeper for halibut is inside Redondo Harbor. You can rent a small skiff for the day at Rocky Point West tackle store (also the fuel dock), and drift live bait. They give you a bait sled for the anchovies, and come spring, the halibut bite usually takes off. You can throw plastics for halibut, but nothing is as good as drifting bait if you have it. Also you have a good shot at barracuda, bonito, spotted bay bass and sand bass. I think the boats go for $60 dollars a day, not bad if you split it between two guys. The sport boats are a little cheaper for a half-day trip, but I like the aspect of being able to fish lighter tackle and doing my own thing. You do have to wade through a lot of shorts, but I have taken lots of legals drifting by the bait receiver, and have seen some big boys come out of this harbor. The halibut are still a little deep in the bay right now, with most fish coming from 60 to 100 feet. It's only a matter of 3 or 4 weeks, and these fish should start moving up towards the piers when the baitfish start to show. It looks like a good afternoon tide on Saturday, and I think I'll hit the beach to throw some plastics for perch and maybe a halibut that's a little lost. See, those white croaker may glow in the dark, but they are good for something. Tight Lines Everyone!!!

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

WHAAAA!! One less whitecroaker for me, Whaaaa! You can hardly blame that helibut though because White Croakers are a tasty morsel that any gamefish or pierfisherman should be happy to eat. I've said it before, they are both nutricious and delicious!!! They can also be a good source of light during blackouts. When I catch more than I can eat instead of freezing them i dry them out and use them as candles. Just put a wick threw them with a sewing needel befor you dry them and then after they burn for hours and they burn diffrent colors but they do kind of smell.

Posted by Needlefish

You've gotta be kidding. I can see using dried out croakers as candles if I was marooned on an island, or trying to earn a merit badge or something...but if I ever tried that at home my girl would throw me out the house! I wonder if this is the origin of the old expression "Is that a dried-out croaker candle in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?"

Chapter 3 — New horizons...and new slang...

February 20, 2001; Posted by monkfish; Anybody been on the Native Sun on a Saturday?

I was just reading on the Biteson Page that on Saturdays, women fish free when accompanied by a full fare paid male. They claim that even 19 women can fish free when accompanied by a male paying full fare. So whats up with that? Are they actually getting the gals on board on Saturdays, or is it just a boatload of hardcore "fishergals" with 5-O-clock shadows? Just curious from anyone whose been on this boat on a Saturday recently.

Posted by aafrench

I have been on the 3/4 day out of Long Beach many times. I have seen a few fugly chicks get on board, but nothing to get excited about. I'd like to show up with 19 chicks and see if they really let them all on for free. Good fishing on the Native Sun the last few days, Lots of short WSB. Tight Lines, Andrew

Posted by baitfish

Chicks are free; Pardon the term chicks, but I just called and they said that on the 1/2 day on Saturday women can fish for free. Tight Lines,

Posted by aafrench

What about chicks with 5'o clock shadows? Do they ride for free too? I was thinking Baitfish can pay, and if we all put on dresses...Just kidding! Tight Lines, Andrew

Posted by baitfish

Hehe...Just don't blame when some old salty puts his hand up you skirt! Hehe

Posted by monkfish

Ok, since I brought it up... I'd be willing to pay the one adult fare on the Native Sun on a Saturday and "treat" 19 other lucky Pier Rats willing to don a dress and make-up, and maybe a wig. Just remember, it would ultimately be up to the crew and the guy selling tickets as to whether you get on or not so how badly you would want to get on would be entirely up to that person. By the way, hillarious analogy Baitfish, he he.

Posted by luv2fish

What about chicks with 5'o clock shadows? That's too funny. I have seen some real chicks with 5 o'clock shadows and more. If any of you have been down to Belmont Pier there is a chick down there with a full on beard. Now even I couldn't handle that. Misty

Posted by jimbojack

I didn't want to say anything, but you brought it up. I've talked to her in passing. I had to look twice or three times and try not to stare. Seems really nice and loves to fish.

Posted by luv2fish

I know, she does seem really nice and does love to fish. Not making fun, but just not sure how a women could do that, but to each his/her own. As long as she is happy and is having fun fishing who cares right.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

Ah, Belmont Beards! I two like fishing at Belmont because they have lots of white croakers just like at Cabrillo and its a little known fact that white croaker can help you grow hair. I noticed one day that my hairline was reseeding but than after I started eating white croaker it started to grow back bushyer then ever and my itchy scalp went away two. the only thing tho that ive noticed is that if you stop eating the white croaker then your hair starts to fall out again but i simply just keep eating them because they are tops in my book. I will often eat 1 or 2 in a breakfast burrito or if i'm in a hurry to get to my morning jog, I'll put a blended white croaker in a jar with 6 raw eggs and just drink it. For me its the breakfast of champions.

Posted by aafrench

I have lived in SoCal my whole life, and have never been to Belmont Pier. I would love all the valid information about this pier that would be important to fishing there. I just read the pier of the month report on Belmont. How is the crowd there? generally friendly? What is the best day to meet the bearded lady? How likely are bass and halibut, or it it the usual small fish like perch? Thanks and tight lines, Andrew

Posted by quik2

I hate Belmont Pier, it's really dirty. Well if u wanna know my opinon on Belmont, I think it suckz. There's bird drops everywhere, they fly over your head and bombs away, I don't mean 1-5 birds, more like 20-30 seagulls. They moment u walk away they steal your bait. It's extremely dirty. I went there once and I ain't going back again. Might as well fish from shore if you have a license; the beach is nice, just their pier suckz. Anyways people there didn't look too friendly to me, I didn't feel threaten just not friendly. And that sign at the entrance staying now to eat any croakers cause of contamination sure scared me, I won't eat anything out of that pier. There's oil well all around that area. Just not a clean pier to me. I like Huntington, Balboa, Seal Beach, Newport better. Althought the end of Newport Pier is very dirty also, not to mention it smells like rotten anchovies. Anyways that's just my opinion maybe there's big fish there who knows. "Our life is what our thoughts make of it."

Posted by baitfish

hehe if it was... Do you think they would admit it? Oh you gotta love the internet, 20 years ago maybe 10 people would have seen that picture, But now the whole world will see it.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

I say nope to dope and ugh to drugs, but if you put a tasty morsel like a white croaker in front of me, I have little will power. That person couldn't possibly have eaten too many white croaker because he is overweight and out of shape. White croakers are a good source of lean protein. It's not widely known, but many body-builders make white croaker-alfalfa sprout shakes with raw eggs, ask anyone at Mussel Beach in Venice and they'll reluctantly admit their secret. I've tried them and they are both nutricious and delicious. If you look closely at that picture, the person is wearing dependz or some other adult diaper and he probally got that way from eating too much junk mexican food that makes you run for the border.

Posted by stinkyfingers

Have you ever had White Croaker soup? I'm sure you've had the tacos. I love Taco Bell, but they don't serve White Croaker. I wonder if it would be good in a soup? Have you tried it? Speaking of drugs, shakes, and croakers, I heard that some guy on Huntington Beach shook up a croaker until it croaked, and then smoked the croaked-croaker and got high. He started seeing things and running up and down the beach, pretending to be a white croaker!

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

Huh, Really? I did not know dat.

Posted by stinkyfingers

Yeah, I think so...but the guy that told me the story had really white hair, and he said he used to eat white croaker all the time, too. He seemed a little funny, so I don't know if I should believe his story.

Posted by harukan

Yeah, haven't you heard about the "croak problem" that's infested our society? Haven't you heard of "croak houses" and "croak babies"? Gallup polls show that many people regard abuse of "croak" as the nation's #1 problem! Really, where HAVE you been? (Yeah, yeah, I know, catching and eating croakers.)

Posted by fisherkid

I used to eat them every morning in breakfast burritos and in protein shakes but lately ive been eatin them for lunch and dinner as a substitute for pork. Croakers....the other white meat. Just goes to show you, White Croakers, there not just for breakfast anymore!

Posted by Mola Joe

I once caught a white croaker that spun his head completely around 3 times, and then puked green stuff on my shoes. These fish are pure evil, possible Satan's children. You guys have no idea the power your messing with.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

Green stuff huh, den maybe those croakers ate the tacos before. Did they say "muaaaaa" (evil laff) before they puked up this stuff?

Posted by Mola Joe

Personally, I've never had a fish say something to me before, but back in the '70s, I had a friend who ate some funny looking mushrooms and had a long talk with a Spanish mackerel. I never believed him though, hell, my friend doesn't even speak Spanish!

Posted by harukan

Satan's children...yes, that's the OTHER thing about those croakers—in addition to providing the material for the "croak" epidemic that is threatening Our Nation's Youth, they have become an increasingly popular feature in Satanic rituals. It is claimed that just ONE croaker is sufficient for a death curse! Soon as I figure out how that works, I'll post it—and we can all put croakers to good use in eliminating poachers, litterers, and other such two-legged offal! By the way, you don't get the drug effect from EATING the damn things, you have to process them in a manner somewhat similar to the way cocaine is refined, and since it's a VERY smelly process, croak labs tend to be located near sewage treatment plants and toxic waste dumps so that the smell isn't so noticeable. That's why some croak addicts glow in the dark.

But croakers ARE a drug!!! You are clearly addicted to them, and if I may say so, you appear to be in the tertiary stage of croakatomaceous dementia. Fortunately, this tertiary stage can last a number of years before going into the dreaded quaternary stage; unfortunately, however, there are no warning signs of when the quaternary stage is about to strike. Out of consideration for your enjoyment of whatever time you have left, I won't describe the quaternary stage--it's too horrible for words, anyway.

Forget the shark, the white croaker seems to be the winner by unanimous decision as the most popular phenomena let alone fish on the message board. I feel "he,it" should be rightfully displayed on our pier fishing T-shirts if they ever formulate. Forget sturgeon, I can't imagine a more likeable fish. The white croaker is definitely going to win by popular vote. Heck, white croaker for President. You got my vote (twice) LOL til' ya' can't no mo!!!!!

They are given a bad rap because major industries like shampoo companies fear that the power of the white croaker to cure itchy head will put them out of business, candle companies two!

Mock Croaker Pie/YUM YUM! I tried a delicius new resipe last night. Mock Croaker Pie! u simply fill your favorit pie shell with ritz crackers, some lemon, butter, a little salt and pepper, then sprinkle one finly dised white croaker and a touch of cayenne pepper and BAM, put a pie crust on top. The rich and aromatic flavor of da croaker seeps into all of da ritz crackers and when served hot or cold, it can't be beat. It is both delishus and nutrishus too. It tastes as though it were made with ALL WHITE CROAKER, so when you run low on these scrumshus morsels just go to Ralphs and buy some ritz crackers and a pie shell and go home and make one of these and then you can eat it and invite all yer frends over and they will tink dat u rilly went overbored and put out and made a pie out of all white croaker!!!

I owe it all to you haru... thanks for da sugjestun for the ritz crackers because i wouldnotofthot of making da mock croaker pie if it hadnt been for u!

Well, now try Triscuit crackers, and see what tasty treats you can come up with! Triscuits are even better than Ritz. Suggestion: spread a thin layer of axle grease on the cracker, add a small slice of croaker, sprinkle on a bit of finely chopped pencil eraser, and stick it under the broiler until the eraser bits melt. YUM!

Cabrillo Pier

Fished da pier around 7ish and came up fer scrach til about 830 den it was WFO on the croakers all morning til abowt 10ish when my bucket was all full. Many croaks to be had fer those who r sick of all dis chatter bout da pore state of da werld and wuld rather go out dere and fish. Allzicansay is dat my fingers were stinky today from all da white croakers out dere.

Who here actually eats the fish they catch? If I catch a fish in Ventura. (maybe), Port Hueneme (no way), Santa Monica (no way), Venice (no way), Seal Beach (no way), all the piers from here to Newprt ( no way); past Corona del Mar... (yeah, clean water)

Posted by stinkyfingers

Up here in the Bay, we eat everything. Even if it glows. Hell, I know that the cigarettes, smog, lead in the water, pesticides in the veggies, and all that trash you never think of will kill you anyway. So what's a poor little fish gonna do to you? Seriously though, no fish from SMB. Outside the bay in the ocean, oh yeah. Within the bay—stripers, oh yeah. Halibut from Monterey, oh, I can't wait to find out. Where are you at anyway?

Posted by aafrench

You can eat them all in moderation; just steer clear of the tom cod! Andrew

Posted by baitfish

I eat certain species, and try most things at least once. I would not eat a fish from Santa Monica Pier, just because of sewage and mercury problems that don't go away. Plus it is only a hop skip and a jump from Palos Verdes, where there is a huge pile of DDT contaminated silt. I eat fish from Malibu though, I would eat from Ventura on North as well. Baitfish

I'm from So Cal; I fish the waters of Ventura and Santa Monica Bay.

I don't no bout dem tom cods but if its a whitecroaker, I instantly will take it home and eat it. Da ones from Cabrillo seem to be da tastyest ones fer me. Once wen I was fishin Cabrillo i kept catching these lizardfish but no whitecroaker so i was mad but den i took one home to eat since i was hungry but my stove wasnt working so i just ate it raw and prasebedarn if it wasnt a mighty tasty meel! I new dis one person who sed dat some peaples eat theyre fish raw with seeweed so i also cot a peace of kelp and ate it with da raw lizardfish and it was mightyfine i must say, mightyfine!

Whats wrong with eating Tom cod Andrew (aafrench). There is nothing about it in this web-site so I am at a lost. So how does the fish looks like????........Joseph

Posted by baitfish

Tom Cod = White Croaker. They are one in the same, the problem is that they are very resistant to toxins and have a lot of fat to store them as well. Santa Monica and Long Beach are renowned for their mercury-laden croakers. Baitfish

Whitecroakercommandr im disappointed in you! White Croaker= kingfish, shiner, Pasadena trout, tommy croaker, little bass, tom cod. Maybe you should change your name to whitecroakerprivate?

I've seen people eat tom cods, but lizard fish...that’s just nasty! There some funny guys at this board. Fish on, and oh yea, Eat on!! Hehehehe

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

Waaaa! U hert my feelings !

Posted by Leapin Bass

In saltwater (inshore) I'll eat about 50% of the legal fish I catch (except for kelp “calico” bass, and sand bass in which case I won't kill any). Offshore (tuna, yellowtail, dorado) I probably eat 80%.

Posted by stinkyfingers

Oh yeah, in terms of fresh vs. salt.... A fish that is natural to freshwater should NOT be taken, killed, or eaten. Maybe if it's your first and eat only one...maybe. Saltwater is whole world of fish that we've never seen, so my ritual is to usually eat the first keeper I catch. Then depending on the flavor, I'll eat more or less. Example: I tried Striper and I loved it! Now, if I catch a striper and he's between 18" and 30", I'll eat him because I love it. If he's over 30", I'll throw him back. I've only killed and eaten ONE largemouth in my life—because he was my first keeper. Although I liked the meat, I feel that because they are not stocked and they breed naturally, I respect that and throw themALL back, gently I might add.

Posted by John Anderson

I have not seen anybody catch a bucketfull of White Croakers since they cleaned up the pier. Maybe the fact that the area got cleaned up that they decided to go elsewhere for it's toxic foods.

Yes, you read that correctly—there really is such a thing. Don't know why the tackle stores don't carry them. A tasty treat to keep you occupied while waiting for the fish to bite. Also good for Halloween. Also good as a joke: somebody comes up and asks if you've caught anything, and you haul out one of these and say, "Well, yeah, I caught this really weird fish, but I don't know what it is." The possibilities are endless . . .

Chapter 6 — Eeb tide...

March 27, 2001; Posted by Shark Assassin; Pier Report, Santa Monica/Seal Beach Jetty

We all went to Santa Monica Pier hoping for some of the Halibut action. We got there around 6:30am. We started off looking for some baitfish; at the end there was already various anglers. There were some people with a tent and a few others. I started off trying for some of the surfperch around the pilings. I was watching a Japanese man nailing them every cast, so I went over to the tackle shop and bought a few grubs. So I cast out, and slowly retrieved it, didn't get anything. So about 20 casts later I got a croaker. For the whole day, I didn't catch anything but croaker. Although, my grandfather was using my light bass pole and something big nailed it! He handed it to me, and about 25 minutes later the line snapped, whatever it was, it was big. About, 1 hour later the guys next to us caught a calico bass, it was about 29 inches and 3lbs. A little later the same guys caught an octopus, this was the first time I ever saw anyone pull up one of those 8-legged wonders. About 1:30 pm my dad and me decided to leave and head over to the Seal Beach Jetty. It took us a little over an hour caring our fishin' stuff across the vast jetty, when we got to the end, we started by setting up some halibut rigs. While I was waiting, I tried an orange/brown Fish Trap. The first cast I got a bite, as I slowly gained inches with my Abu Garcia Ambasseduer I pulled up a big ol' calico, it was at least 2 1/2 lbs! Other than that calico, we caught many eating quality croakers and a few baby calicos’. Overall, it was a pretty good fishing experience. I would suggest if you have the time and patience to walk to the end and try it, it was good fishin'.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

Finally a brave sole! who admits he eets white croaker to. We shuld exshange resipes someday. Da other day i was kind of low on croakers but also got a lizerdfish and a swellshark so i made a meel of em. Dey were rilly good as sevichee but i'm not sure if i let dem soak in da lemun juice fer long enuf becuz dat night i got a rilly bad stomak ache but Oh yea, i also got a jacksmelt to and dat was also in da sevichee and it was killer but i think you nead to soke dem longer in da juice so you dont get a stomak ache or sumthing. Way to stickem Shark Assassin!

Is anyone else TIRED of this drivel?? This white croaker garbage was mildly amusing at first, but it's been run into the ground and done to death. An dat stupid fake ghetto patois (or whatever it's supposed to be) never was funny to start with. I, for one, say it's time to pull the plug on this guy.

Posted by Scooterfish

Come on... let's not get TOO serious...This is fishing, after all.

Posted by Songslinger

Considering that Whitecroakercommandr's patois sounds, to me, like vintage New Orleans cobblestone speech, Scooterfish may be getting a preview of what is soon to be all around him...Anyway, I may be weird (well, that's an understatement) but Whitecroakercommandr makes me laugh, and that's worth quite a bit in this often too humorless world. Better loosen that necktie Harukan and take off your shoes. Time to run barefoot for a spell.

Posted by harukan

Grouch...? I don't know, maybe I'm just a grouch today. In any case, I'm going to spare myself and not bother reading any more of WCC's posts. That will solve the problem for me.

Posted by Red Fish

White Croaker Commander does sound Cajun.

Posted by baitfish

He is about as Cajun as a Yankee Pot Roast. He is just a kid who likes to tell jokes on the board. Adam

Posted by harukan

Fun? If the guy's posts were actually FUNNY, that would be fine and dandy, but they're not. Mola Joe and others have posted jokes that were funny. Stinkyfingers posted a couple of anecdotes lately that were VERY funny. That's having fun. By contrast, "croaker" reminds me of a geeky junior-high kid who thinks he's the class clown and persists in making belching noises (and laughing at his own "wit") long after everyone else has grown tired of him AND his noises.

Posted by whitecroakercommandr

whot did i do? all im doing is talking bout my fishing and eatin experienses. So iyam a bad speller, is dat so rong????? )*(

Never mind It appears that some people find you amusing, so disregard my complaint. As I said, I may just be in a grouchy mood today.

Posted by johnnyboy

Now now harukan, seems that you've caved in way too easily...if you honestly believe what you said in the first place, be a man and make a stand

Posted by stinkyfingers

No, it's not. And you're not either. What I mean by that is that you are not a bad speller, but you are doing it ON PURPOSE. During the week of February 21st, you went through your transformation into this "ghetto" mode. Check your own posts, dude. You speak normal before February 21st, then, on February 27th—the "ghetto" kicks in. Why? I, for one, and being among the most critical people, do not oppose your presence. However, I have asked you to go back to the way you used to post - SIMPLY TO MAKE IT EASIER TO READ. And for everyone else: Guess what, guys? I'm quite certain he's one of us, in disguise, just playing games with us and having fun. Perhaps someday he'll reveal his true identity, and what if it was Songslinger, or Snookie, or me? ha ha ha. But trust me, it's not me.

Posted by johnnyboy

Hey now, you give yourself way too much credit in believing that the whitecroakercommandr is one of you just having fun! I for one know that the whitecroakercommandr is a paraplegic that can only get around on a wheelchair and has to resort to eating whitecroaker, or whatever else she catches, to put food on the table.

Got tired long ago,

Posted by Ed

And quit opening any post from him. Aside from not caring for his style, I realized several weeks ago that there was not a shred of fishing info in any of his posts anyway. Just now for grins I did a search of all of his messages and actually looked at each one back well into February. Sure enough, not a single report, piece of advice, question or anything else this board was established for. This board has practically become a chat room for quite a sizable group. I personally think it hurts its effectiveness, but as we've seen, not many others feel that way.

Posted by Scooterfish

Filter? maybe Ken can add a name filter so you can filter out all those annoying posts without having to think about it too much. Scoot

Posted by baitfish

Personally I consider this a board of friends. I feel that even the conversations help things out. Too many other boards have this dry lifeless feel to them. This board has life of it's own with real people who care about the world and life. So sometimes the stories go off topic, but nearly everyone of those posts started with fishing. You can't please everyone, but this board is awfully close and has something for everyone.Adam

Posted by aafrench

I 2nd da moshun. Got old a long time ago. I no longer read his posts either. I know Boomer334 feels th same also. Andrew

Posted by aafrench

Furthermore, I tried to match up his IP address with everybody else’s. No matches, He is his own person I believe.

Posted by Mike. C

Yeah! I didn't want to be the one to say something because many do find WCC funny, but I think the whole thing is kinda lame. Growing up in East Oakland the one thing I do know is ghetto humor, and if WCC is really from any mean streets he would think his sense of humor is lame too. So my guess is fraud. I never thought to check the IP even though I have that program too. It figures.

Posted by Ken Jones

A hard decision...can't please everyone all...I too grew tired of these posts a long time ago. However, I've only tried to edit posts if they used questionable language, were intended to hurt or make fun of someone, of were totally off the subject and of questionable taste. I realize that some posts stretch the definition of "fishing board" chatter but have enjoyed many of the discussions myself -- and learned a few things along the way. The best approach is to do as several of you have suggested, simply ignore his/her posts. There are several very experienced, enlightening, and what I think are good individuals on this board so concentrate on their posts. In one of Dylan's songs, he mentions that Lincoln said you can please all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but not all of the people all of the time. He then said, "I'll let you in my dream if you let me in yours." Perhaps that is the approach we all need to take in these chats—we're entering the realm of someone's everyday dreams—some good and some not so good—and we can choose not to enter.

March 13, 2001; Posted by boomer334; Can you believe this?

I found two Master rods three months ago at my grandfather’s house (he bought them). Ocean sticks. In two months both of them are broken. I called them and they said that they would take a look at them and see if there was a problem with them. Everyone out there never buy a Master rod unless you are not going to use them to fish. -Boomer

Hehe...I have a "Master" surf pole and spin reel... they are tres' cheap, the wraps on the guides don't last very long at all... mine are all cracking after 6 months...How old are they? Information on Whitecroakercommandr: Here's what I know about wccmmdr. This is based only on my data and no others. Whitecroakercommandr apparently has two modes of entry into the system. He's been observed to access via both dialup as well as with broadband. But he's been known to come in from other networks as well, implying that he uses a friends computer to login. No corporate affiliation has been established as wcc appears to have been quite careful with his tracks. Traceroutes indicate that his access points to the internet are in So.Cal. I can confirm that at least one msgboard participant is either the whitecroakercommandr, or has attempted to be his copy-cat. The data are not conclusive, but they lean towards this person being the wccmmdr. For reasons of privacy, I will not share this specific information except with Rich Reano. Gyozadude.

First, Whitecroakercommandr has never, ever posted a fishing report. He has never, ever helped anybody by answering a question or providing fishing tips or information. He has never even done so much as provide a link to a useful or interesting web site. In short, he has contributed NOTHING to this board. All he ever did was run that stupid "white croaker" garbage into the ground. It was never that funny to start with, and he kept it up and kept it up long past the point that anyone with a brain would have dropped it -- the way a not-very-bright four-year-old will go on telling the same stupid knock-knock joke until his parents are ready to strangle him. After he got thrown off the board, he kept returning under other names. He reminds me of the "class geek" in junior high school. You know-- the loser who sits at the back of the room, and has absolutely NOTHING going for him-- no brains, no looks, no personality, no social skills, no talents or aptitudes or anything else to make himself worthy of attention. So, he sits at the back of the room, reading the Hustler magazine secreted inside his textbook, and when he can't stand being ignored any longer, he makes an obnoxious noise—a belch or an armpit fart or even a real fart—to force everybody to notice him because it's the ONLY way he can get attention. Snort. Belch. Bra-a-ap. Pathetic.

IP address on source? Hey Gyoza, good work, but, how did you know what to traceroute? Is the IP address of the poster in the HTML source for the posts, are you checking out the guy's email domain, or are you just an 1337 h4x0r 7h47 0W4z 7h3 p13rf15h14'z 80x0r?

I'll tell you how he did it! It was me. I RSVP's WCC to the Catalina event, and to the MMD as a joke. I’m sure nobody really thought he was going to attend (or maybe he did?) G-Dude picked up that I RVSP'd once from home, and once when I was bored at my mother-in-laws house. I have AT&T Broadband, and she has Dial-up AOL. I am not the real WCC, but maybe Johnnyboy or Birdsnestbob have a clue who is! Will the real WCC please stand up? Andrew

So Frenchy... why were you trying to be wcc? Ahhh... the truth comes out. I'm not going to go into the details of how the data was gathered. But suffice it to say that it did identify you, Frenchy, as the culprit. You are claiming to be a copy-cat now, but how do we know that for sure? We're mostly grown ups on this board, so it's not my place to give you advice of this sort. Certainly, you're free to do as you please, but be careful that people don't mistaken you for someone you don't want to be mistaken for. - Gyozadude "Yes - I can roll my own potsticker skins"

So Frenchy... why were you trying to be wcc? Come on now, I know you well enough by now to know that you would trace it to me. I was waiting for you to out me when I did it. I then posted that WCC had RSVP'd to see the reaction. When a person RSVP's on your system, it shows the IP address you RSVP'd from. It wasn't that hard to figure out was it. All you had to do is compare the IP's of 30 people who RSVP'd. As for the true identity of WCC, I once tried to figure it out. Your IP address used to show up on the top of each of your posts. I guess Rich removed this feautre. I checked WCC's IP address with the IP address of every posting member of this board. I never made a match. My conclusion was that he was not an active member who was also posting as WCC. WCC's IP was always the same, indicating that he always posted from the same location. I found WCC's posts to be humorous and entertaining. I wouldn't mind seeing more. It only got annoying when it became a daily thing. When he would pop on about once a month it was cool. Andrew

IP addresses are not unique...Frenchy: I didn't go public on you last month because of self-impose ethics of privacy I adopt whenever I take a role as webmaster. I was also hoping that you'd learned your own lesson when you deleted the entry on your own accord. Yet, you attempted a repeat act for the MMDerby. Don't you find it unusual that you were the only one who attempted to spoof wcc? Either he got into your head or you are WCC...- Gyozadude "Yes - I can roll my own potsticker skins"

IP addresses are not unique...I found that most the people that post here have unique static IP addresses. Only a few people have dynamic IP addresses. Andrew

GD, try this, 1 lb of chopped white...errr...fish (cooked or raw), 2 tblspns of soyu, 1/2 cup chopped onions, some chopped ginger & garlic, 1/4 head of cabbage (chopped), 1 can of chopped waterchestnuts, and a touch of sesame oil. mix it together then stuff & seal some gyoza skins, fry & steam in the usual method. fish gyoza+soyu+rice vinegar+steamed rice=happy tummy! Any white colored fish will do. JB P.S. I don't think Frenchy is the WCC otherwise when he rsvp'd to that thing, he would have done it in an untraceable manner like the real WCC. Also, do you have any high blood pressure medicine you can float to lucy...I think she really needs it.

Johnnyboy = whitecroakercommander...On my way back from Ventura, I stopped at H-Jacks Cove, and caught the evening bite, landed four good sized fish on, get this, doughballs...

Birdsnestbob = Johnnyboy = Whitcroakercommandr...Funny how Johnnyboy did not post since WCC stopped posting. Now all of a sudden this character Birdsnestbob appears and is asking about WCC, and what happens? Johnnyboy is suddenly back and now rides on the coat-tail of birdsnestbob.... It's all in the archives!!!! Hey Ken take that award away from G-Dude.... Its mine! Andrew

and furthermore......frenchy, frenchy, frenchy...everytime i post, you call me whitecroaker. coincidence? i think not! you admit to being whitecroaker on 2 occasions and then try to pawn it off on me. coincidence again? i think not! G-dude traces you to the whitecroaker 2x, coincidence? let's face it frenchy, g-dude deserves the award, not you. Afterall he proved you wuz da whitecroaker twice. i mean come on frenchy, you really haven't proved anyting except that you know how to spell "coincidence." the real coincidence it dat youz get busted den along comes bnb and you are hot to divert attention from yourself, then i come along and you try to divert attention again. so frenchy, i think deh reel question iz "When are you going to "surface" again as da white croaker comander???"

Pier Angler of the Year Award goes to Frenchy..Good work Andrew. I was searching through the archives of March '01 last night looking for similarities in WCCR's posts but did not come up with anything. I was looking for a simple comparison answer in regards to writing styles, not some super sophisticated internert IP deal. Hats off! Now for another (not so mystery). The character "Harukan" that vanished from last year. That person still is alive and well with a new name on the board! That didn't take a "Matlock" to figure that one out! Fish On!!!!!! Red-

Fess up fo sho Johnnyboy... cuz you is da whitecroaker! WHoooo! I secon da moshun. End of fish story. Fish On!!!!!! Red-

Birdsnestbob = Johnnyboy = Whitcroakercommandr...GD, how about running that IPtrace thing on me, BNB, WCC, anf Frenchy. My guess is that only Frenchy will be linked to WCC.

Someone, please explain this whole whitecroakercommandr thing. It seems as though this individual has rubbed people the wrong way in the past. Truth be told, what I've read so far has actually been really amusing.

A thread...I think I'll go back and make up a "Classic Thread" of all the WCC messages and the search for his/her identity. It will be the craziest thread to date.

LOL!!! Oh man, I have never seen so much attention and energy devoted to a more ridiculous cause. We really have too much spare time, If only we could focus this productively rather than wasting it on someone who spends hours of his time creating new croaker dialect. Adam I fish with my feet on the ground...

I didn't waste any time...While I'll let Frenchy, et al. debate circumstantial evidence till the cows come home, I'm happy to let you know that the instrumentation I've put in place appears to work on extremely small numbers of posts and requires no speculation. I've ID'd Frenchy beyond a shadow of a doubt to an accuracy of 1 in 10e+18. You'll win the superlotto twice in a row before the instrumentation is wrong. So Frenchy can proclaim his ignorance/proclaim innocence/redirect-blame ad infinitum. But the facts are the facts. Frenchy's the only one I've detected in 4 months that has attempted to use the whitecroakercommandr name. The software is fairly efficient. In fact, Rich gave me the idea originally. So there's little to no need to correlate IP addresses here. It also protects privacy. We aren't going to make rash accusations about someone. It keeps the IT dept. on the up and up professional level, if you know what I mean. Currently Rich runs the system in Perl CGI scripts. If and when a cutover occurs to a Java-based server system, I'll gladly provide him the sources for the instrumentation. - Gyozadude "Yes - I can roll my own potsticker skins"

I'm talking about cumulative energy...from all involved, not anyone in particular. And it was just a sarcastic joke. WCC is almost a hobby to some. Adam I fish with my feet on the ground...

I believed it was Andrew, aka aafrench, aka Frenchy and his friend Boomer334 before GDude came up with his IP trace evidence.

The few posts that may have come up after he passed away were a copycat.

The reference to a paraplegic fishing and posting could have been Boomer334.

Also, the IP trace that Ed (Pescare) did led to L.A. schools. Andrew repaired copy machines and copy repair is always going on at schools periodically.

No hard evidence, but this is where I stand.

Could of just been a “Hollywood type” trying out characters on us, but I doubt this or maybe “they got the part?”
