Some new old tackle tips...from Ron Crandall

Per my wife's orders, I've been cleaning out (many) boxes in my garage. But, I always check them before I throw anything out and found some old Ron's Tackle Tips that were on the original PFIC message board in 1997/98. I thought I had lost them! I posted three and will post more later today/tomorrow. Some may be a little dated. They're on the Tackle and Tackle Tips forum.

Ron was PFIC's tackle tips advisor for years. At the time he had a combination camera/fishing reel repair shop in downtown Santa Rosa. On his days off he would fish the beaches near his home north of Bodega Bay.

I added additinal tackle tips from Ron Crandall. Given that some are +20 years old it would be interesting to see your reactions to what he wrote given the change in tackle and lines in the intervening yerars. Ron is now retired but as far as I know still fishing from his home up by Bodega Bay.

I miss Ron’s cool little shop. He did a bunch of rebuilds for me back around 98. Heard about him on your sites first rendition.
Figured I’d go check him out up in SR to visit my dad. Miss that guy and his contributions.

Hmmmm, can't remember since when, but somehow those words from the Boss of the gùng-ho boss always proved to be more powerful and effective making things happen around the house, even in the addicted Fisherman world! Only God knows why, perhaps? Don't you folks agree?

Well Glen, I've been married 54+ years and Pat and I also have our separate hobbies and interests. Thankfully she's never minded my fishing trips except perhaps one early and very short trip. Two days and one night of our honeymoon was spent at Avalon on Catalina Island. In the morning I awoke, she was asleep, and I figured why not go fishing? I slipped on some shorts, went down to the Green Pleasurre Pier, rented some tackle and a row boat, and rowed out to catch some fish (a variety). She didn't say much when I got back to our room. Kiddingly I mentioned that it simply showed that the significant other in our marriage would be my fishing. She didn't seem amused.

As for — The "boss" meme is so last century, relic of 1950s television — you do realize that the '50s is when I was first watching television? My TV families were the Andersons (Father Knows Best) and Cleavers (Leave It To Beaver).

BTW, I made reference to that movie and song in my autobiography when discussing my father's propensity to move and move and move...

Same shows but also Gunsmoke, Twilight Zone, Superman, etc. I should have checked on that boss reference since we've never considered either one to be "the "boss."

I'm still around, just being very quiet.

Since Retirement in 2000 I was in a wrestling match with a FORD Pickup while I was on a Bicycle, "I Lost". After a year of rehab/physical therapy I have lost the feeling in several fingers. This means no more rod wrapping as I can't feel the thread.

I still live on the coast near Bodega Bay and am very proud of the fact that my notes helped others to enjoy their day on the water.

I’m glad to hear you made it trough such an ordeal like that. I’m sorry to hear about the fingers. I’m sure rod wrapping would be a good retirement hobby.

I certainly miss your little shop. I appreciate all the work you did on numerous reels of mine.

Other than the accident, rehab and the remains limitations I hope you’re enjoying retirement.

Ron: Me too, am sorry to hear about the Pickup truck wrestling incident you went through and the result of loss of feeling in your fingers. But, look at the positive side: Retiring in that beautiful poetic Bodega Bay up there with plenty of fishes to swing your rods to is indeed a type of dream to lots of folks who are still in the 8 to 5 rat racing fast lanes. . . I really enjoyed and got 'hooked' to the scene in that movie "The Birds" filmed many moons ago up there as the young lady actress was steering her little boat across the beautiful Bodega Bay ... Imagine you're right in the middle of that paradise ! So, just enjoy your blessed retirement years up there hah!

Ron, Good to hear from you and like the others sorry to hear about the accident. I hope you're still able to fish that little beach that you showed me many years ago and I want you to know that we're still enjoying your advice.
