First time fishing at this pier at Dana Point. It is a short pier and has a lower section that is right on the water. On a whim, we decided to stop there a fish for an hour before our pre-Valentines Day dinner at Brio Tuscan Grille.
Fished high-lo rigs 12lb flourocarbon with one size 6 bait holder hook and one size 8 mosquito hook. Both hooks were baited with pieces of market shrimp
Found a school of shiner perch right at/underneath the pier. During the hour we hour 10 shiner perch and a short calico bass. When we left I saw a nice man and his family fishing at the end of the pier with unbaited sabiki rigs not having any luck so we gave them our left over shrimp and gave them some tips on where to drop their lines.
I like this area. It has a lot of variety. There is a jetty within walking distance and a dock that is castable from the pier plus there are rocks near the shoreline that you can also fish from the pier. Also there is the lower section of the pier right close to the water for throwing lures or fish underneath the pier with more precision. Eager to go back when I have some more time.
