Shelter Island Pier

Warm weather and ideal tides but catching was slow. Went out tonight from 9:30 pm to about 1am to cool down from hot weather. Mackerel bite was off tonight. Angler next to me caught à Angel Shark. I caught some small Bass, croaker, and some sculpin. Mainly using salted anchovy on a light spinning reel and 6 pound test. Fun on light tackle... I'm hoping the mackerel bite picks up! Does the parking lot open late? For some reason I'm thinking it is closed at 10 PM.
Macks are always fun...I think they are full from all the baitfish. Tons of smelt and chovies.

It's open late. I fish late and never seen it closed. Weekends parking is tight due to the Humphries live concerts.

Thanks for the info and clarification. Shelter Island Pier has been the only pier I've visited multiple times (twice actually) and I like it enough to come back. Knowing that it is accessible at night makes it much better. (y)

I really like that pier. With the short pier at Redondo gone, I'd have to say it's my favorite.
As much as I enjoyed fishing the pier, fishing the rocky shoreline to rhe east of the pier was even .more productive. Berkley Gulp minnows dropshotted always yielded results.

I'll add that I'm new to San Diego (from LA) and Shelter Island is so far my favorite San Diego pier despite its small size. The San Diego Piers I've gone to so far aside from Shelter Island are Oceanside Pier, OB Pier, and Crystal Pier.

Oceanside is a bit too far from me. OB left a bad taste for me as there are some really interesting individuals - possibly on drugs. For Crystal Pier I cannot stand the wooden structure below where hooks can get caught.

Yes...Shelter is also my favorite. The access to restrooms is a big plus. Also on weekends the pier has a small tackle shop open. During the day, they have a small deli that serves beer, soda, sandwiches, and other food items.

Awesome views of downtown and Military ships and aircraft just across the pier. Very cool seeing the aircraft cruising by in tactical formation...
