San Clemente Pier - May 2nd

Had the opportunity to fish the pier with my wife. Not to often we get the chance to enjoy some fishing time together.

Overcast conditions and the fish weren't too cooperative. Fished a receeding high tide. Fish started biting around 9 a.m. The Mrs. drew first blood with several Shiner perch on a sabiki, tipped with shrimp and mussel.

As I was cutting some bait for her, my fishing pole "fell" to its side. I suspected a "fish on" and was rewarded with a nice Spotfin croaker. The fish hit fresh mussel on a high/low rig.

I rebaited and tossed out the set up, hoping for another "spotty ".

In the meantime, we were content with the steady Shiner perch bite, catch and release. As no other fish seemed to be interested.

About an hour later, my rod bent over and line was peeling from it. I had hooked into a Batray on my light rod loaded with ten pound test! The ray put up a good fight. With the help of my wife we netted the ray. The fish had a 23 inch wingspan and was released. The ray hit fresh mussel on the high/low rig.

The rest of the morning slowed down as the tide ebbed. So we packed things up. Had fun with my best fishing buddy and happy to land a keeper Spotfin for her!

Good luck everyone.
