You will find many "tackle tips" from Ron Crandall on these pages. Ron first contacted me in early 1995 regarding the the "sand crab screens" or traps that he had seen mentioned in Pier Fishing In California, 1st Edition. In response, I put him in touch with the good folks at Wylie's Tackle in Malibu who carried the traps.

I next heard from him in February 1995 regarding the Santa Rosa Fishing Tackle Show that was being held that April in Santa Rosa.

I went down and saw him at the show and we began discussing his new business in Santa Rosa, a combination camera shop (The Camera Doctor) and fishing reel shop (Ron's Reel Repair). In our discussion I mentioned that I was looking for someone to write a "Tackle Tips" column and over the months the idea evolved into "Ron's Tackle Tips" that became a monthly feature of the original Pier Fishing In California website (version one).

There's still a lot of good information in these tips — although some may also be a little dated. I once visited Ron at his home on the coast just north of Bodega Bay. From his backyard there was a long and steep stairway down to a small beach that was basically his beach. He's retired now and I hope he's still fishing that beach and catching the big perch that were a favorite.
