Fished Balboa pier this morning starting around 7AM low tide. Bite was very slow in the morning. Tried fishing small hook sabiki with a float. Saw some transient schools of bait fish flash just below the water surface but could not get any of them to bite. About an hour into fishing the bite picked up on the bottom with a combination of baby bocaccio, baby white fish, and shiner perch. Caught quite a few of each of these until the bite died down (all fish were released). Finished off with a hard earned smelt by slow retrieving the sabiki through the upper part of the water.

Did not see any other fish caught while we were there. No sign of mackerel. Stopped fishing around 10:15AM.
