Newport Pier 6/29

#1
Fished Newport pier with my son and friend last night from around 4pm till 9pm. Caught two short halibuts on the north side right before the wider end of the pier on white flukes on jig heads. Besides that the regular bait fish, sardines, lizardfish and the mackerel were plentiful. My friend caught a tiny pacific staghorn and son got a lizard fish and a mackerel on a jig. We were hoping to do some night fishing off the end towards the canyon for sculpin but with the “non commercial commercial fisherman” it was all but impossible.

I know it’s come up here plenty of times but the non commercial commercial fisherman keeping a non exaggerated hundreds of mackerel, and everything else that is caught and dispatching none of them properly is crazy. I saw two bat rays get tossed into plastic bags immediately upon catch. Keeping the fish for food is one thing but 3 of the biggest holders of fish got on their phones and people showed up specifically to buy all their fish. Fish and game should put a stop to this but they are rarely seen. I also had a guy trying to buy my 18” Halibut who repeatedly asked even after I measured it in front of him and told him it’s short. All for fishing and keeping the fish but fishermen should be responsible and take care of what the sea provides. End of rant.

Thank you. That is not a rant, that is reality. It is disgusting and unacceptable. Wish they allowed volunteer F&G. I would love it. Watch what’s coming in and wait at the end and check coolers. A few $$$$ tickets is a start. Use
CALTIP
(888-334-2258)

I used it at SB and luckily the warden was at Huntington and walked up to the group and started writing tickets. I’m hoping the ones that are catching way undersized White Sea bass get taught a lesson. Oh I thought it was a sand bass won’t fly. Conservation efforts become fruitless. D

good luck with that ,sorry to be negative but if they fish and wild life aren't there don't expect any results
Its a luck of the draw thing if there is a warden in the area. There just are not enough of them. While they may not show up for the incident you called for, the more calls they get about an area the more likely they are to periodically check there.
