Newport Harbor and Balboa Pier 10/27

Took a quick trip to the M(?) street dock on Balboa Peninsula from 3pm-6pm. The water was full of perfect bait-sized smelt that readily bit sabikis. Unfortunately nothing other than a short halibut was around to eat any baits that I put out. I then moved to Balboa Pier, and stayed there until 7:30pm. Using the fresh smelt as bait, I caught one mackerel and a couple large lizardfish. The crabs must have been out in full force, as every other bait was chewed on/gone. On one occasion, a (swimmer?) crab hung on the bait long enough to be pulled up. I saw one angler using a large live smelt nearly get their rod pulled over.
