Newport Beach Striped Bass.

My son was fishing the beach at Newport and caught a 27 inch striped bass.The fish was caught on a sandcrab.

Cool! A nice catch and one that's always unexpected down there. At one time Newport Bay was stocked with stripers and quite a few were caught. Those days are, by and large, over. Nevertheless, stripers continue to be caught in SoCal waters every year just not in big numbers. Several have been taken from the Oceanside Pier in the last couple of years and I think we have had reports from both the Balboa and Newport piers.

Nice catch. Not sure if more stripers are being caught in the surf in socal the last several years or if the internet just lets us hear about them. Either way they appear to be around here a bit.
