A note I received from the Coastal Commission:

Hi Ken!

Hope you’re well. I just gave you a call—will try again later. I’m reaching out because our staff report was just posted on our website. Here’s a link to it. Our staff has worked hard to reach a compromise to support pier angling on the pier and you may find the Special Conditions to address some of the concerns you’ve expressed. We’re recommending approval with conditions.

Some key points from Staff Report conditions:
  • The overall public encroachment footprint of the restaurant has decrease from the September proposal.
  • Public tables and seating has been added for public use.
  • A new, small bait shop will be operated near the restrooms.
  • The restaurant will host a fishing derby biannually

Please feel free to share the staff report on your website and if you or your website followers are interested in listening or providing public comment at the hearing for this item, here’s the details:
  • The hearing for this item will be on Thursday, November 16, 2023. The item is listed item 13(a) November 2023 Application No. 5-22-0804. I don’t have an exact time for this project, it’ll depend on how quickly Commissioners will go through this item.

Please let me know if you’ve any questions or need support in signing up to speak.

All good things,

Sounds like changes are coming and hard to say how they will impact fishing (although space will be lost on the south side by the restrooms). Sorry I didn't get this to you sooner but I've been under the weather for the past week or so.

Oh darn. Behind the restrooms at HB Pier has been my go-to spot, as the restrooms offer shelter from the wind while allowing me to fish inshore. Hopefully, there is still some space behind the building after the renovation.

Wow, Ken, you've been under the weather too? I have had a really bad flu for over a week. I just went back to work yesterday at Washington School near Ferry Point Pier. I am just now getting well (but still pushing some of it out). Get well soon, Ken!
