Anchovies.... I fished Malibu pier from 10am to sunset today. Whole day was spectacle of all sorts of birds enjoying a buffet of anchovies. Pier master told us that they were pushed by dolphins this morning and stayed around the entire area. It was INSANE number of anchovies in the water. It was crazy when I got there and still crazy when I left. Fishing on the other hands was slow. On live bait, I had one short bite, which was all. Tried everything else too, swimbait, jig, shrimp hi-lo, some mussels and strip of sardines But nothing on those even a bite. A regular guy I talked fished there yesterday and he said it was good with some halibut & rays plus 18 inch jacksmelts. But none of those were taking any of our offerings. I saw none of a dozen or so anglers today landing anything.... Perhaps too much baits in water makes fishing tough sometimes... There were some large anchovies in water. Excitement came with retrieving my straw hat that brown off to water by winds and managing to untangle a seagull, which was the largest catch of a day... I took some video that shows the buffet better but don't know how to share it here. I will put it in the comment section if/when I figure it out. FN
