How do you work these? I've tried a few times but not much luck. I feel that to effectively use these some wading is required...

Hi MisterT, just cast it out as far as you can and retrieve slowly, it is a very shallow diver, so it can be worked until it beaches, very close to the surf area. The key is slow retrieve, it wobbles nicely when you do it right.
