Huntington Beach Pier 08/31

Fished Huntington Pier 5pm-10:30pm Saturday. Relatively slow. Fished near the end till nightfall. No mackerels were around. Some sardines and smelt. Buddy caught a pacific butterfish which is a new species for us which is always exciting. I got one thornback.
Moved to our normal shaking spot near the bathroom area mid pier at nightfall. I had a fresh never frozen bonito I had gotten kayak fishing the day before off Dana point. Tossed out a chunk on a fish finder and had a hook up in under 2 minutes (8:15pm). Had a good fight and safely netted a brown smooth hound shark. Measured in at 36” nose to tail tip and weighed in at 9.1 lbs. Quick photo and lowered her back down for a good release. Nothing else for the rest of the night. Turns out that Smoothhound would have been an international gamefish association record if it was certified, current record is 6.5 lbs.
high tide: 8:53pm
Sunset: 7:16pm
Water temp: 70 degrees F

Nice trip. I didn't know Brown Smoothound sharks lived this far south. I was at Huntington Pier yesterday, and didn't see much other than smelt and sardines, but I did see a baby Bat Ray in the surf. I'll post a more detailed report later.
