Hi everyone! I just thought I'd introduce myself. My name is Tyler, and I am an avid angler from Southern California, where I regularly fish off of piers, the surf, and party boats. I grew up fishing at Bolsa Chica State Beach, but I eventually learned to fish at the local piers. I fish all of the Orange County Piers, in addition to Belmont and Cabrillo as often as I can. I discovered this website while browsing online, and after reading a few of the articles, have learned invaluble knowledge that otherwise would've taken countless trips to figure out.
My typical setups consist of two Cajus Voltaeus rods, and Cajus 200 baitcasters with 10 lb spectra and a 4 lb flourocarbon leader. I tie a double (or sometimes triple depending on the depth) dropper loop rig with a 2-oz weight and size 10-12 mosquito hooks baited with squid strips. As I am not usually fishing alone when I am on the pier, I also bring a PENN Fierce II combo with 65 lb spectra and a 25 lb mono leader for sharks and rays. I tie a carolina rig with a 3 oz weight and a 2/O (depending on the bait) hook, baited with a whole squid, a live smelt or sardine, or a large chunk of mackerel. I also bring a hoop net for lobsters or crabs. I typically catch topsmelt, jacksmelt, mackerel, salema, white croaker, and thornbacks. I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you and posting my first report!
Below are some photos of my previous trips:
