Help ID This Fish

Hi everyone - I fished Richmond Ferry Point Pier recently and caught this fish (see pic "Mystery Fish.jpg"). At first I thought it was a white sea perch but then the head shape looked different. I posted a white sea perch which I caught earlier that same day alongside the mystery fish so you can compare but can someone more knowledgeable than myself help identify the species of this mystery fish?

I’ve mentioned this before. In order to get a reliable ID we need be able to count the fin rays. I need a sharp picture from different angles of a freshly caught fish. This picture is too blurry to show them. You can probably find it in this chart but several are similar.

Black seaperch aka blackperch. Colors can vary but easily identified by a large patch of enlarged scales between the pectoral and pelvic fins.

[Red Fish]

Yep, black perch…even if it doesn’t look very black, the features are there.
