Never been to catalina so off we go. Wasn't great fishing. In fact, it was very tough. Fished hard from 11 to 6 throwing the metal jig for bones and losing all 4 hookups. Never have I lost so many in a row. It was really frustrating. Wondering now, if it was the cheap 2 piece 8 foot rods i bought. I normally fish 1 piece shorter rods. Guy next to me was killing it with the bubble and fly, but of course I didn't have bubbles. Ended up fishing bait squid and got a legal sheepshead to end the day and fishing a little better. Just a little. Dehydrated, tired and sun burned back to the cottage.

With our boat leaving next afternoon, I bought some bubbles, fished it hard again for one sniff on the fly all day. Yesterday was hot and sunny, this day was cold and windy. I will get my revenge. We fish and we learn.

I use a solid Rubber Ball, about 3 inches in diameter. Drill a hole thru it .Thread your line thru it and use a Big bead and swivel to stop it. Add 24 inches of leader and your While Streamer Fly. The Rubber Ball makes lots more splash and bubbles driving the Bonito crazy. Go as fast as you can. No way you can reel faster than they can swim. If you give them to good a look at it they will turn away. Watch the Birds. The lower on the water they are the closer the bait is to the surface. Birds flying way up high, hardly worth a cast. Suddenly Birds low and flying in a circle, Hit that spot hard. Advanced technique, carry Green and Yellow, Blue and White, Purple and Black, Streamers in 2 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch sizes. Sometimes they want something different than White.

Ninja, Your Cat posts got me wanting to try. I always pump my rod and get bit on the slow drop. These fish were definitely bigger than the ones I have gotten on the mainland piers. The guy next to me killing it explained to me they get even bigger in Dec and Jan.

I do not see any mention of the dowel in the original post. However, I can picture the unit with dowel and eye screws. I may try to pass a heavy line through the ball.
So far, I have a wooden "bubble", a golf ball, a BB filled, and a water filled ones.

I also like the "launcher" unit:

They do not break like the plastic ones.

I try to make one for the June 21st trip to the Mole.

Yes, they can get pretty big there. Pumping rods after setting a hook can lose your fish depending on your hooks I think. If it is not too big one, I always try to reel them in steadily to keep my lines tight. It seems to help reducing hookouts for me. Hope this helps!
