On Santa Monica Pier we watched a couple, evidently newlyweds, start pier fishing. In front of a rental tackle stand he said, “Don’t ask questions, just watch and do as I do.” He turned into the rental stand, rented two outfits and hurried up the pier, but she wasn’t ahead waiting for him, as he supposed. She was behind him—with two rented outfits. She was blond and beautiful but was she so dumb after all.
