Construction at the Ferry Point Pier in Richmond

I stopped by the Ferry Point Pier in Richmond the other day to see the construction on the pier. Perhaps construction is the wrong word since what they are doing is removing the old pilings from the original ferry pier that once was used to transport people to San Francisco. The pilings are rotting away, breaking off in some cases, and considered a danger to boats. Thus the removal of the pilings although the new pier itself is untouched and the old metal part of the ferry landing will be left standing (it sits on concrete). The hopes are that eel grass beds will be established where the pilings originally were located. It sounds like there is no fishing 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. but after the workers leave people can still fish the pier. So too, apparently, the weekend hours when workers are absent. We will see how the change to the bottom environment affects the fish population. As for myself, I always enjoy fishing around the pilings for perch. Some pics.

We will see what this does to the perch fishing. This pier has provided me with the greatest variety of perch in the east bay, walleyes, pogies, white perch even pile perch and rubberlip. Hoping the fish hang around!

Ken, you have archived history with your photos, as the pier does not look like that anymore 1 week after your picture taking. All the pilings are removed off the end of the pier and behind the end. The fishing has improved (that is my report to date).
