Advice Needed on Catching Striped Bass in SF Area

#1
Hello - I've been trying to target striped bass around San Francisco Bay Area piers using both hi-lo and sliding sinker rigs. Problem is each time I cast, crabs usually eat my bait.

Maybe my hi-lo rig is not "high" enough above the sinker (distance is ~1 ft from sinker to the "lo" hook with another 1ft to the "hi" hook and each hook is hanging around 1 inch away from my leader) or maybe i'm casting in areas where there just are too many crabs (Richmond area) and not casting far enough out of the reach of crabs (I'm getting a longer 9 ft rod this weekend to cast farther) or maybe my leader is too short (around 3 ft long).

In any case, does anyone have any tips on how to keep crabs from eating my bait?

FYI I'm using market shrimp and ghost shrimp for bait.

Thanks in advance!
