Subject: Trip down to the Fred Hall Show
Was able to get out each morning before the Fred Hall show and do a little fishing. Recap—
Saturday, 3/6/06: Met Jimbojack at the Seal Beach Pier and we fished from 6:10-8:10. A slow day but it was great fishing with Jim as always.
Results:
7 Walleye surfperch
1 Blackperch
1 Jacksmelt
All fish were caught on pile worms. The blackperch was on the bottom directly under the closed tackle shop. The walleyes were, for the most part, also on the bottom. All fish were caught on size 6 hooks on the light pole.
Sunday, 3/7/06: Fished from 5:45-8 a.m. on the last small finger pier on Shoreline Drive next to the Long Beach Convention Center.
Fished Results:
4 Kelp rockfish
2 Blackperch
1 Cabezon — 12 1/2 inches
1 Black-and-yellow rockfish (a strange catch there)
All fish were caught on pile worms I had brought down from Stockton. One perch was caught about 20 feet out from the shore. All of the other fish were caught fishing down in the crevices in the rocks that line the shore area. It was high tide and I figured a few fish would be under those rocks and in the cracks—and I was right. Also saw one white croaker caught by an angler casting out from the end of the pier. He also said he caught a 41-inch leopard shark there last week.

Ken Jones does Goleta Pier ... 3-8-04
Ken stopped in at Goleta this morning to fish the incoming tide on his way back from the Fred Hall Show ... and in the process demonstrated once again why he is Mr. Pier Rat. He got 23 fish - or maybe 26 ... I lose track ... like Fishingham I have a problem counting past 10
SBRF, Kelp RF, Rainbow perch, Buttermouth perch, Shiner perch, Sardines, Lingcod and a big spider crab. Plus a mystery fish ... sculpin? He will post a picture of it.
The weather has been just great the past few days and today was no exception - it looked like a lot of the regulars took the day off from work ... and Ken got to meet them all. But, given his reputation, no one wanted to fish alongside of him for fear of looking bad. I don't think there were more than 3 or 4 other fish caught on the pier during that time. I was lucky to get one of those but lost several others to the kelp including a good takedown about the time Ken got a 17" Ling - first of the season at Goleta!
The bait of choice this morning was fresh sardines strips - Ken caught the last of the sardines before I got there so of course he was ahead of the game from the beginning
But that is not to discount his skill ... if you haven't fished with him before and you get the chance don't pass it up ... he is an inspiration for the rest of us

Monday 3/8/06: Fished Goleta Pier with Boyd from 6:25-10:55 A.M.
The rainbow seaperch and blackperch were hanging right next to the mussel-encrusted pilings on the bottom. A large pileperch was languidly swimming around the piling about four feet down from the top but I couldn't get it to bite. Bait for the perch was fresh mussels. When I arrived at the pier at 6:30 I found a clump of mussels that someone had left from the previous night so I adopted it and had some good fresh mussels—prime seaperch bait. Tackle was the usual: light rod (that was wrapped by Ron Crandall actually) and reel, 8-pound test line, and two size six hooks, one six inches above the one ounce sinker, the second six inches up (seaperch are usually right on the bottom or up a few inches)..
When I first arrived I noticed some baitfish in the water so broke out the Sabiki. Unfortunately I was only able to get one fresh sardine (too many shiners) but it proved to be the bait of choice for several of the rockfish and the lingcod. The other rockfish were caught on small pieces of market shrimp. I was tossing my “GDude Special” out to the kelp that envelops the pipeline reef on the west side of the pier. That’s where the ling and rockfish were hanging. I was again using a high/low rigging on the outfit but I was using larger, size 4 hooks in the kelp. I typically use fairly small pieces of bait and have long felt that such bait will catch both small and large fish whereas large bait only catches large fish. But I know some of you don't like to be bothered by the smaller rockfish. If so stick to the larger bait.
Results:
10 Brown rockfish
2 Blackperch
1 Lingcod
1 Rainbow seaperch
1 Kelp rockfish
1 Bonehead Sculpin
1 Pacific sardine
2 Speckled sanddab
4 Shinerperch
+ 1 Spider crab
So see, 23 really isn’t that impressive.
