Fish was released, very small wound as it wasn’t a target species and I have no net. Tried to give it the smallest wound possible, it swam off fine. 5 planks long I will try to measure it today. That gaff shot is the only one near its tail

No. You don't gaff fish unless you intend to keep them. Period. That little hole can easily be infected and kill the fish. Throw away the gaff and get a crab ring. Fish prepared.

ps It swam away because that's what fish do. A guy could be mortally wounded by a gunshot and sprint down the street. Doesn't mean he's okay.
