Single hooks on lures

Lures can be very effective, but they almost always come with treble hooks. I found this to be a problem when I caught undersized barracudas off the Mission Bay jetty in San Diego. They were fun to catch, but, as Ken noted the treble hooks were tough on their mouths. I tried reducing a treble hook to a single, but I never caught another barracuda with it. I don't no if this was because they weren't around, the balance of the lure was changed by the lighter hook, or single hooks are less likely to catch fish.

If anyone has thoughts on this, I would be interested to read them.

I have made some flutter jigs using single hook at the end and was able to hook a small mouth bass and some rockfish. You should be able to tell if the barracuda is striking the lure or not. If they strike and you miss, then you know you miss.

Try using a single hook about the size of the treble hook, preferably with small yellow and green feathers. Go chrome, anchovy, or yellow/white/ green.

I keep a couple of jigs with treble hooks but I’ve replaced most of mine with single hooks because I have a better chance of getting them unstuck in rocky areas. I usually use Mustad hooks about the size and type of the ones that come with the 3/4 oz crippled herring or krocodiles. I DO notice less bites by barracuda with larger hooks but when they are really biting, I still hook em’.
