Sorry to rain on your parade, but the fish wasn’t caught legally. This thread should be deleted or locked because 1) It’s a major spot-burn 2) Matt is potentially incriminating himself in poaching. Anyone who has fished with Matt knows that the fish was taken on a possible fourth pole. He fishes his first two poles with live anchovies. His third pole is usually a sabiki rod. His fourth pole is his plugging rod. His biggest mistake was admitting he plugged for 11 hours and was rewarded with a fish of a lifetime. I highly doubt Matt would travel 400+ miles round trip to pick up live anchovies and fish one rod with live anchovies and plug for 11 hours. I have personally seen him fish SOLO with 4 rods where his 4th rod was the plugging rod. I've seen this happen too many times EVERYWHERE where someone catches and keeps a legal fish on a 3rd or 4th rod while plugging. I have notified fish and game every time and nothing has ever been done. Screw the fish and game! Nice try, but fishing with more than two rods is always easier. #Truth

Usually I stay out of this stuff. You have inspired me, however.
You seem to know a lot about Matt and his activities, enough so you could have told him all this personally (or in a pm) and kept the personal accusation off the public board. That would have been the classier approach. As well as the one that took some courage. Yet you've felt so compelled to broadcast this, you signed up on this message board to do just that. A grand total of two posts, all dedicated to Matt and Muni Pier.
By the way, how does one spot-burn a public pier?
As for multiple poles, I don't like seeing people cheat either. I'd never call the DFW because of 1)priorities: rather have them focus on illegal fish sizes and limits; and 2)common sense: as soon as the wardens arrive on a pier, multiple poles get reeled in and there is no longer evidence of cheating. It is a waste of time. Personally I think calling them is a waste of time anyway. There are not enough agents in the field for this state, and many are poorly apprised concerning the regulations. I have had to correct wardens more than few times. I always carry the regs with me. Keeps me from having to travel to Sacramento to prove my innocence when a young eager agent gets too full of himself. Some of these gung ho types are so raw they've barely started shaving and their voices haven't changed yet.
I myself don't use multiple poles, even on the ocean. Too much maintenance that gets in the way of enjoyment. If someone else wants to use up all his bait with a bunch of poles, whatever.
Your selective outrage is interesting. Why no mention of the recent poster here who had pictures of perch over limits? Fish envy? I mean, that hallie is one hell of a fish, a lifetime catch for many. Was the fish hooked in the mouth, caught on one pole and landed correctly? It would seem so.
One of the chief reasons I stopped posting here was the behavior and attitude of computer anglers. Much talk, spurious information and the worst kind of armchair cracker barrel fishing advice. It's like Man's Favorite Sport, that old Rock Hudson movie about an angling magazine writer who never actually fished.
Go out and catch. Then you needn't worry about others.

Paul, Matt needs the chance to defend himself and I will ask Matt the questions. You can certainly have more than two rods in possession (and many do) as long as you only use two at a time so I'll see what he says. I haven't fished with Matt for years but when I did I didn't see him break any rules.

As for calling the wardens, I agree with Glen, that it's mostly a useless proposition. Recently when I went to San Diego I saw severe examples of people using too many rods, i.e., the sharkers at the Ocean Beach Pier, and I've seen it at way too many piers. However, the wardens do not like to visit the piers since they see it as somewhat useless given the numbers and the problems that Glen mentioned. It's easier to watch boaters and kayakers from a distance with binoculars. And, unfortiunately it's getting worse, not better, even though there is far more information out there than ever before.
So, Paul Pierce, if that is your real name, tell us why anyone should give anything you have written any credibility? Your very first post on PFIC says you weren’t even there to witness what you claim.

I've always believed a person is innocent until proven guilty and I think we need to follow that rule. The post was made on pure speculation since "Paul" was not present and unfortunately Matt has had to take the attack as presented. Why is the post still up? I said I would investigate the matter and I am.
Well Mr. Pierce allow me to clarify some things for you: I was fishing with two rods, one with live bait and the other plugging. I had a friend with me who was also fishing two rods as well. We had a 5th rod set up, but if you were paying attention, it was leaning against a bench, and the line was not in the water. I don't believe you and I have ever met, so I don't understand how you can possibly have an opinion on how i conduct myself as a fisherman and a person? If you really knew me, like some of the others on this board, then its no surprise that I drive 500 miles, fish for 12 hours all while following the laws in place. You've seen me fish solo? Fishing 2 rods is taboo? I need a 3rd and a 4th rod to catch fish? I don't even bring 4 rods out with me, so that is just blatant slander. Maybe you've seen me with friends, but didn't do your basic math correctly, ie, 2 rods x 2 people = 4 legal rods. I'm really quite surprised, but not at all offended because what your saying is pure nonsense and I don't need to prove myself because I always follow the rules and I've never illegally poached fish. I do wonder, were you there at the pier when I caught the fish? There were about 15-20 tourists taking pictures when we landed it, were you mixed in the crowd? I know for certain you weren't fishing because there wasn't anyone fishing the end but my friend and I at the time. Please, if you have any more statements that can support your claim I'd like to hear it because honestly, I think your making things up, and it really does sound like your full of it. I think its really sad that your trying to drag my name through the mud with such an audacious claim that merits no honesty whatsoever. Please feel free to PM me or, hell, even post a reply if you have anything else you'd like to hash out because the silly nature of this whole thing has me intrigued. Oh, and btw, I never have sabiki rigs on any of my rods because I BUY LIVE BAIT.
