Subject: Herring anyone???

Guy down at the bait shop told me that the herring are running this week. Usually at night. Along the shore next to the ferry building in Sausalito. Anyone know anything about catching them and or gathering their eggs? I hear they are good bait for sturgeon and stripers. I have tomorrow free if anyone wants to go... Fish On!

How do you put them on a hook?

It's a good idea to get a clump of them and cover the hooks, then secure with elastic thread. Sometimes using whatever they’re attached to will work because it is natural. ***********All I Want Is A Fair Fight***********

How would you go about obtaining enough of eggs for bait? Im thinking a cast net from the ferry dock. Pull up a bunch of that browninsh water plant that is common on the bay floor. Any tips?

They are typically dense and they form a solid covering that can be peeled from a surface, almost like paper. I've seen rocks completely covered to the point that you can’t see the surface for the eggs. Then, you cut it to size, wad it up on a hook and tie it to secure.

I also don’t think you can use the roe unless it has been spawned because it won’t be in a form you can put on a hook. Just use the whole fish with roe for sturgeon bait like they do in the South Bay. When I was a kid my dad and I would always hit the herring runs because he loved the roe. Yuck, I can still remember how I almost puked when he talked me into trying it. Probably why I still don’t eat fish. Just use any bait rig, like Sabiki or Piscatore and you'll nail ‘em if they’re there. Ed

Ed is right. If you are able to catch the herring it will be filled with roe since it comes here to spawn. Just cut the head and tail off and expose the roe. Do any sturgeon experts knows if herring with roe is better than shrimp baits?

Stan, I’m guessing it would be equal or better than shrimp baits. I say this because the sturgeon love the herring eggs. The sturgeon basically follow the herring and wait for the spawn. If there is a spawn in Sausalito, that would be a good spot to try. They should be feeding like crazy. Hope that answers your question. FlatFish Hunter A.K.A ali
