Yeah the kelpfish were something I hadn't ever encountered until a trip down to Monterey a month or two ago. I had caught a striped kelpfish but I didn't know it at the time. I thought it was some super tiny juvenile greenling. Recently I've been using the iNaturalist app which is (in its own words): "a citizen science project and online social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe."
Since using it I've never had trouble identifying anything that I catch if it's unfamiliar, and have learned a ton about the various plant life and non--fish wildlife that surround the spots I fish.
