Crabbing Reels

What spinning reels are you using?.......I have destroyed every one I have tried so far.

Most recently a 6500 and an 8000 Okuma.........I am switching to Squidders with their solid metal gears until I find a spinning reel that can handle the load.......My spot I sometimes get more than one crab per snare.....

I use an old bg8000. its still not strong enough. I should switch to conventional reels if I can cast em. like my Shimano speedmaster or jigmaster

It took me a while to learn them....But it is absolutely worth it.........I can Spool an Abu 6500 spooled with 20# on a good cast when I am in practice.......I could probably teach you pretty easily....

What size rod are you going to use on that D. I used some conventionals at Baker Beach a few years ago. If you are comfortable with using them, no problemas. But, I would use 5:1 or higher speed if you have it. Reeling in a Squidder at 3:1 takes a lot of time and effort. 6500 to me seems like you'd want something with more torque; rather use a Jigmaster 500 or similar for crab snaring. My old Newell hi-speed was perfect on a 12' rod. An old GS Penn or new Squall or Fathom would work fine on a rod 10' or more.

D... you ain't destroying my old 9500 Penn Spinfisher, its bullet-proof. Nor, my old Shimano BR 4500. Someone gave me an old Daiwa 7000C...another Sherman tank!

DSRTEGL- I have the Penn Fierce II, 6000 and 8000 size. the knob on the 6000 is starting to wobble loose, from the extra force hauling in crabs. The 8000s are pretty good. i can hook up with you at your spot with doubles and let you try one out 😃

I have 11' and 12' Rods at the moment with a 10' and 2 11' Rods that need to be built still........
