Coast mystery: Cow washes up on beach

The highest tide of the year brought an unusual visitor to Ocean Beach Tuesday afternoon -- a dead cow. While it is not unusual for dead sea animals such as sea lions and whales to wash up on the beach, this was the first time anyone could remember that a cow ended up on the coast of San Francisco.
The all-black animal is bigger than a calf and smaller than a dairy cow. It ended up at the foot of Noriega Street and was reported to the National Park Police by a visitor at about 4 p.m. Where the animal came from or how it got in the ocean is a mystery. "We've never had a dead cow on the beach before,'' said National Park Service spokesman Rich Wideman. It will be buried in the sand today, Wideman said.

Don't have a cow. It was probably someone's fishing buddy. Too bad.

Maybe it was killed by a Cowshark!

Fell off a *cattle* boat? no BULL? Half-MOO Bay? Probably got a little too close to a raging river, and out he went. Another theory is the "renegade escapee cow on a boat to Japan" one. Perhaps a cow got loose on her way to the land of the rising sun and decided to make a swim for it. I hope no one has a beef with my flippant remarks.

"It will be buried in the sand today, Widerman" I hope they bury it deep and far away from the normal places beach goers hang out. Imagine the terror on a little one's face when they go digging in the sand and unearth that thing!

Haha. An(udder) thought...it just got too close to the edge of the feeding range and over into the water it went. I think there's some farms over near Pacifica where you can see the cows grazing really close to the shore.

I saw a grainy pic of it taken last night. It looked like it was kind of torn up around the belly, but it didn't have the balloon-like bloat or cartoonishly stiff straight-out legs that drowned cows usually have. I live just a few minutes (walking) from Ocean Beach, and I have seen all manner of odd things wash up there. But I don't think it had been in the water for long.

It could be from Tomales Bay. There are cows on that beach. Also with the high surf and floods, pretty much one got swept away.
